SCHOOL VACATIONS.
HIGHCLIFF. On Thursday, December 21, there took place at Highcliff in combination with the annual school concert a social given by the residents to Mr Whyte, the head master of the school, who is now retiring from the service. The concert programme consisted of songs, recitations, and plays by the pupils, supplemented by up local talent. Miss Daiscy Hall, an excellent soprano, earned a storm of applause, and responded to the demand for an encore. Miss N. Bishop sang tastefully “Idle Words,” and also took part in duet with Mr D. Robertson. Messrs D. and J. Robertson each contributed a .song, while the instrumental part was well represented by Miss Johnston in a piano solo and by Misses Begg and Whyte in a piano duet, the audience by their hearty applause leaving the performers no room for doubt as to the pleasure they gave. The Chairman (Mr Fairbairn) said he was pleased to say that during the 16 years Mr Whyte had spent amongst them ho had not heard of a single disagreeable word or unpleasant incident in regard to school matters. Ho presented to Mr Whyte as an appreciation of his services by the parents and others in and around Highcliff and Tomahawk an illuminated address, a walking stick, a travelling bag, and to Mrs Whyte a handsome silver tea service; also from the pupils to Mr Whyte a handsome clock suitably inscribed. The Rev. Mr Erwin followed with a short address, and presented Mrs Whyte with a pair of bronze statuettes, as a gift from an unknown friend. Mr Whyte endorsed the remarks of the chairman in regard to the way in which school matters had run so smoothly during his residence. KAITANGATA. The annual break-up of the Kaitangata School took place on Dec. 22. The Chairman (Dr Fitzgerald) congratulated the school and staff on their year’s work, and called upon Mr Jas. Allen, M.P., to present the prizes to the infant tots. The Rev. Mr Currie and Rev. Mr Wbodhouse presented the prizes to the children of Standards I, 11, and 111. At the conclusion of the ceremony the parents and friends were invited to inspect the work of the scholars. In the evening a concert was given by the children. The programme consisted of action songs, recitations, chorus stmgs, gymnastic display, scarf drill, etc. At the conclusion of the concert Mr Allen presented the prizes to the scholars from Standards IV to VII. Mr Wm. Duncan (Mayor of Kaitangata) presented to Wm. Nicholas, dux of the school, a gold modal, and also medals to M. Carson and R. Penman for gymnastics and drill. The Sawyers’ Bay School break-up ceremony took place on Wednesday, Deo. 20, in the public hall in the presence of a full attendance of parents and friends of the children. The chairman of the school committee. Mr E Laley, presided, and at an interval in the proceedings presented the prize-winners with the books provided for them, and in the course of a few brief re-
marks paid a high tribute to the work that bad been don© in the school during the year, and thanked the teachers and pupils for the evening’s entertainment. The school Cadets were present in uniform, and contributed considerably to the success of the evening. The Navy League prizes were handed over by Mr J. On Wednesday, December 20, the annual break-up ceremony of the above school took place in the Coronation Hail, when a large number of parents and friends were present to witness tne .interesting ceremony, the seating accommodation for visitors being taxed to its utmost capacity. The chairman of the School Committee (Mr W. W. P. Hall) presided, and others who occupied seats on the platform werfc:— Rev. J. C. Small, Rev. G. Miller, Messrs R- Milne, R. M'Kinnon, J. R. Lang (members of committee), Mr James Allen, M.P., and Mr Charles King (Mayor). The Chairman opened the proceedings with a short address, and then an entertaining programme of solos, recitations, etc., was given by the scholars. The Navy League prizes and shooting medals wore presented by Mr Janies Allen, who briefly spoke on the aims and obiects of the Navy- League—to preserve and encourage a spirit of enthusiastic loyalty to the British Empire. of which this Dominion formed a portion. The Chairman, in thanking the teachers, said the committee was under a deep debt of gratitude for the excellent manner in which the work had been carried on during the year; there had not been the slightest friction. He specially commended the services of the acting rector (Mr A. J. ! Ferguson), who had carried out the tempo- ; rary duties admirably. Hearty cheers were given by the pupils for their teachers, and the happy function closed with singing the National Anthem. Each child received a nice book along with the certificate. There was great disappointment over the loss of attendance prizes and certificates, as many of the scholars had .-.ttendod very well right through the first three quarters, but the bad weather and an epidemic of mumps spoilt their cliances. Navy League Essay.—Standard VIIsabel J. Paterson. Standard V—Olive Turner. These girls scored 77 and 75 respectively for their essays. Proficiency certificates wore granted to Isabel J. Paterson and Donald Sutherland in Standard VI, and to Ada Broad, Ivy Roseveare, Elspeth Bower, and Cyril William in Standard V. MOUNT CARGILL. The break-up ceremony in connection with the Mount Cargill School took place at the school on Dec. 22. A fair number of parents and friends of the children acre present considering the unsettled state of the weather. The chairman (Mr Lockwood) presided, and a good programme of items was gone through by the children, under the capable management of their teacher (Miss Gillespie). After the presentation of prizes and toys, cheers were called for Miss Gillespie, and also for the children. After a number of race# had been run, the assemblage adjourned to the schoolroom, where a plentiful supply of refreshments was provided.
