OTAGO ANNUAL REGATTA

FINE YACHTING PERFORMANCES. The Otago annual regatta was held at Port Chalmers on Dec. 26 under circumstances that were not altogether favourable. For the sailing events there was a strong full-sail breeze from the north-east, permitting all lower canvas to be carried in moat cases. The flood tide running with the wind made the sailing times somewhat slow for the distance covered. From the point of view of the oarsmen, the wind wag a disadvantage, and necessitated a postponement of their events until the afternoon, with the result that it was about 9 p.m. before the programme finally closed. The attendance of the public was very satisfactory. The railway returns ©how that a very large number of people travelled to Port Chalmers, the majority no doubt patronising the regatta. The Now Zealand Shipping Company’s steamer Paparoa (Captain Bower) was the flagship, and her spacious decks afforded accommodation for a large crowd of sightseers, who obtained an excellent view of the races. The best of arrangements had been made by the committee. A' deal of time was lost in getting the rowing boats to the starting point, and in order to avoid this in future it would b© well, perhaps, to appoint shed stewards. The flag boat, the Ellon Ballanoe, was kindly lent to the officials for the day by Mr W. J. P. M Culloch. The motor beat races brought out some very speedy craft, which made their way along very nicely in spite of the rough state of the water. The following shows the winnings of the various rowing clubs: —Union R.C., £2l; Canterbury R.C., £ls; Queen’s Drive 8.C., £7; Aivarua 8.C., £5: Port Chalmers 13. C.. £4; North End 8.C., £4; Oamaru 8.C.. £4; Star 8.C., £3; D.A.8.0., £3; Otago R.C., £2; Timaru, £l. A word of thanks -is due to Mr P. J. Priest, who made an extremely obliging press steward. The flagship Paparoa had her masts, yards, and bridge liberally and prettily decorated for the occasion with flags and foliage. The members of the Regatta Committee are indebted to Captain Bower and others on the vessel for many kindnesses, and to the same gentlemen the press representatives desire to express thanks for the use of a room for writing up their “ copy.” The judges were: Rowing—Messrs M. H. Priest, G. Hogan, and F. Keenan; sailing and motoring —-Messrs H. E. Moller, E. Knewstubb, H. Percy, and K. Morri■xm; umpire, Mr W. J. Wilson; starters — Messrs W. P. Morgan (rowdng), C. G.
