CONSIDERABLE DAMAGE DONE. TIMARU, December 30. A sudden rise in the Oplhi River in tho small hours of Friday morning caught fcomo picnic patries camped on a low level; near Pleasant Point, and they had to wade waist deep to reach the bank afterf i their tents were awash. Ladies as well j as men pluckily returned to salvage thei# belongings, but a good deal was carried off by the stream. y The rainfall was very heavy in Upper Opihi, and the river at Silver* stream and Fairlie was exceptionally high, doing much damage to roadfl and breaking away light stock and foot bridges. The Waihi River was high 1 above Geraldine, One man in a carWae stuck, and another went in to help hinfi-. but both carte had to be abandoned. The , horses were saved. Most of the settlers on Glandeboye Noy 1 (State settlement) lost most of their, stock and crops, and had water flowing through their houses owing to an overflow of the Orarl River. The Lands Departs ment will be applied to for help In pro*' vidlng security against a repetition of thd mishap.
