SOUTHLAND STOCK MARKET. (From Ora Own Correspondent.) INA'PR CARGILL, December 30.

In consequence of the holidays there has been very little doing in the stock market during the past week, and this state of affairs is likely to continue till the New Year holidays are over. The fat sheep trade has been fairly good for the season, although it is well known that fat lambs and fat sheep have berm killing on the light side all over, and also that there has been a farily largo number of rejects. While fat cattle have been up and down during the last few months as regards value, the price has been very firm — in fact, prices to-day are even better than during the last few months. The amount of feed all over Southland is exceptionally plentiful, and this no doubt accounts to a large extent for the great demand for store cattle. A large number of well bred sorts have also been sent to Balclutha and the Taieri. in fact, just on 150 head of three-vear-olds were forwarded there last week. Prices for all kinds of stock may Ire quoted as follows: —Fat cattle: Best ox beef. 50s to 31s; heifer beef, 27s to 28s; prime ox beef, 24s to 255: ordinary, down to 2&s. Fat sheep: Best, butchers’ wethers, in the wool, 23s to 23s 6d ; lighter. 20s to 21s; best fAorn wethe-s. 17s to 17a 6d; lighter, 16s to 16s 6cl. There is a really good inquiry for young ewes, this no doubt being due to the scarcity of stock of this description. B"st, in the wool. 20s to 21s; light. 17s to 18s. Fat lambs: There is a good demand for the heb’day trade. Best, 15s 6d to 16s; others. 13s to' l?s 6d. Store cattle: Three-year-old steers. £6 10s to £7 15s; for extra, special, two-year-olds. £4 10s to £5 10s; vearlings and 18 months, £3 5s to £3 17s 6d : calv-fi. 35s_ to 40s. Dairy oovff; Good cows still continue in very strong demand and sell readily at £ll to £l2; ordinary. £8 to £9. Store sheep: A strong demand still continues for store sheep, and not only local, but also northern buyers, are very keen to get hold of best store sheep : in fact it is understood that Canterbury is considerably understocked, and the demand from there will continue. Young owes, with 100 per cent, lambs. 12s 6d to 17s 6<l. all counted; mixed agf?. 11s 6d to 12s 6d. all counted ; older.- 8s to 9s, all counted ; best ewe hogget*. 17s 6d to 18s; mixed sexes, 15s to 15s 6d ; smaller, down to 14s; wether hoggets. 14s to 14s 6d: store wothers, two-tooth, 15s 6d to 16s 6d; four-

tooth, up to 18s. All these prices are for store sheep in the wool. LIVE STOCK AND PRODUCE MARKET. Burnside, Thursday, December 28. ■ The sale next week will be held on Thursday, January 4.
