BOWLING.

Secretaries afe requested to forward particulars •f games played and of forthcoming matches. AUCKLAND TOURNAMENT. AUCKLAND, December 31. The Auckland Provincial Bowling Association’s annual pennant tournament was concluded yesterday. In the eemi-final of the ivinks Harvey (Devonport) beat Yoale (Ponsonby) by 21 to 17, and Armstrong (VVaikino) beat Baildon (Urey Lynn) by 23 to 9. The final was won by Devonport, who beat Waikino by 28 to 14. TOURNAMENT AT MILTON. . A double-handed progressive tournament was played on Milton G-recn on Boxing Day, in which 20 players participated. Four rounds of nine heads each game were played. Three pairs were left in the semifinals, in which W. R. Brady and H. H. Wilkinson defeated R. Rcbertson and G. Reed, but wore beaten in the final by T. G. Henderson and F. Twiss, who thus secured the trophies. N.Z. BOWLING ASSOCIATION ANNUAL TOURNAMENT. RINK PLAY. According to established custom the annual tournament of the New Zealand Bowling Association was this year held in Dunedin, the only deviation made from the beaten path being that the 27th December liad been fixed upon for the opening day instead of the middle of January. It seems probable that had the old d'ato been adhered to, the competitors would have been more numerous, but as it was there was a big turn-out of bowlers, and the four greens in use were fully occupied. Quito the usual amount of onthusiaism was manifested among the bowling fraternity, and interest in the tournament was by no means confined to thoae participating in the tournament alone. There was at all times a liberal sprinkling of spectators about, and as the afternoon drew to close the miinibor sensibly i nor eased. The day was devoted to playing the rinik competitions in their earlier stages, and good progress was made. There were three competitions in all, two being made subordinate to the champion competition with which the tournament started. These two were called B rinks and C rinks, those suffering certain defeats in the originating competition being drafted into B and subsequently C, so that the rink tournament to all intents and purposes took the form of the threo-lifo eystem. The result of the method adopted was that every rink, however unlucky, was assured of a good busy day’s play. The association has ueuallv been pretty fortunate in the matter of weather, but on the 27th was anything but an ideal day for bowling, or for anything else for the matter of that. Still, it was sufficiently good for the tournament to proceed, which is something bowlers have to bo thankful for. No matter how sheltered a green might bo, it was impossible to altogether escape the effects of the high wind blowing, and many a bowl well enough laid down under ordinary circumstances ran away narrow, or failed to answer the bias owing to its being held up by the wind. But bowlers are accustomed to the eccentricities of the weather, and as they are a goodtempered lot. not a grumble was heard. A fit matter for comment is that in one instance, at least, the position of plavers in a rink was changed several times, the object apparently being to give everyone a chance to skip. It does not seem oesiiablo that such a. chopping and changing about should be allowed. It is. however, a matter for tho centre to consider .and adjudicate upon. , .. , , The Dunedin Green was in splendid order and visiting players were most laudatory in their comments. It was anticipated, in view of tho recent rain, that the gieen would bo somewhat dead, but experience showed that sun and wind had been benefactors, tho rinks, without exception, being keen. Bowlers, however, were faced with tho problem of a somewhat tricky north*.;ast wind, which somewhat interfered with the play. As it happened, however, very few Diinodin Club members were playing on the green, so that Dunedin’s prevailing wind was as much an advantage as otherwise to all competitors. _ Some very fine games were played, and in several instances tho final result was in doubt up till the last shot. Mr W. was tho umpire of tho green, and in the discharge of his duties gave every satisfaction. Tho Kaituna Green was in first class condition, and not nearly so heavy as would have been expected. Towards tho afternoon it became fairly keen. Some very good games wore witnessed, and there werrsomo very close contests. 3?ayne and M'Gallan had a very close struggle, M‘Gallan scoring with his last bowl and winning tho game by a point. An exciting finish was witnessed between Carswell and Abbot, the scores being 19 all on tho 21st head. Another head was played and resulted in favour of Carswell, the result being 22—19 Owing to the efforts of the caretaker (Mr R. Grinlay) the Valley Green wasplaying well, but the gusty wind affected the play to some extent. Mr John White, the green umpire, was called upon several times to decide a number of minor points. Lunch was provided in the pavilion by tho caretaker. The visitors appreciated this innovation, as it allowed them to give more time to play. Everything was exceedingly well ordered at the St. Kilda Green, where play was continuous from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.. and Mr J. H. Hancock proved an efficient umpire. Ho kept tho record of the play in a way that could bo understood by anyone, and was seldom called upon to exercise his functions as umpire, and when the

was his decisions appeared to give satisfaction. Information was readily and courteously afforded by him to players and press. The green played well, except for a slight bumpiness, which was only to be expected, but the wind proved very troublesome, and must have been a source of irritation to the players, though, beyond an occasional despairing tossing of the arms in the air as a bowl well and truly laid was swtpt out of its proper course, there was no sign of it. There was nothing very exceptional in the way of play, notwithstanding the fact that many of those competing were veterans at the game, and have on plenty of occasions nut up a great performance on the bowing green The plain English of it was that the draw could not be relied upon, and in such a case good play is out of the question. There were several stubborn _ fights for supremacy, and ono was seen in the game between Bentley and M‘Fadden, who kept pegging along shot and shot about. _ And there . were the usual misfortunes in the shape of cutting out the wrong bowl and leaving an opponent with a hat full. So™ 6 games wore fairly evenly Contested, while others were of a runaway order, and in a few instances the vanquished were defeated by more than two to one. In one case the score was 24 to 8. While on the subject of scores regret may be expressed that the scoring cards do not always show the true result. A generous winner; and most bowlers who won are generously inclined; thinks nothing of permitting several additional points being put on to his opponent s score and while that is a very commendable ‘and graceful concession in one sense it is not desirable in tournament_play. In no other sport or pastime is it done, and it may bo taken for granted thattho defeated parlv is not seeking to bo “"ret down lightly ” when he loses at bowls. The players engaged on this green yesterday will continue the rink play this morning. Second Day.—Thursday. The incessant drizzle on Thursday morning rendered play on the Dunedin greens impossible. and it was decided _ to continue the Champion Rinks at the Taiori, where no rain fell during the morning. It was agreed by the committee that only the

Champion Rinks should bo played, in ordos if possible to find the green winner* of those rinks. Accordingly, a large numbet of the bowlers went to the Taieri by the 210 p.m. train. The Taieri Club’s Green at Mosgicl was found to bo comparatively dry, though the drizzle was beginning t<> come down, getting thicker as evening came on, and making conditions very miserable. As a result of this unfavourable state of things, the majority of the players wore overcoats or used their umbrellas, and only one round could be played. Tho results were : NORTH-EAST VARNEY GREEN. Fifth Round. J. White (Sit. Kilda) 32 beat F. Smith (Kaituna) 20. A. Young (Green Island) 20 beat D. M'Farlane (St. Kilda) 18. White to play Young for green winner. KAITUNA GREEN. Fifth Round, O. DUNEDIN GREEN: Fifth Round, Cooper (Kaituna) IS beat Maynard (Ashburton) 16. Stevenson (Taieri) 26 beat Mann (Fairfield) 18. Cooper plays Stevenson for green winner, RINK PLAV. Third Day—Friday. Tho committee met on Friday morning, and, in view of the fact that there were not sufficient grounds in a dry state to play tho Doubles, it was decided to continue the Rinks on the St, Kilda, Kaituna, Dunedin, and Roslyn' greens. The St. Kilda Green was playing really well, and the absence of any strong wind allowed practically perfect drawing. Mr Gardiner (the caretaker) has worked a big improvement in this pretty playing area, and the players were unanimous in their approval of it. The chances were that the Dunedin Green on Friday would bo unplayable, but the conditions improved throughout the forenoon, and sunshine and tho wind was favourable, the result being when play started at 1 o’clock a series of rinks that it would bo had to beat under any conditions - was presented to the competing bowlers. A two-yard-wide lino of scrim was run along each end of the green, and this, whilst conserving tho turf, did not in any way interfere with the play, although, of course, it made very long heads impossible. The Kaituna Green was in very fair condition when play commenced, and improved as the afternoon wore on. Some very close and interesting games _ wero witnessed; also some “ walk-aways.” Owing to the flood in the North-East Valley having mad© the local green unfit for play, the gameti set down for decisioathero were played on the Roslyn Green, which wa s kindly placed at the disposal of the Tournament Committee. THe principal game was that for tho North-East Valley Green championship between White (St. Kilda) and Young (Green Island). It was watched by a number of enthusiasts, and resulted in a keen contest, White winning with a load of 7 points. Tho following are tho day’s results: — ST. KILDA GREEN. Champion Rinks. GREEN WINNER. J. M'Curdy (St.- Kilda) 25 beat J. CJ. Bentley (Dunedin) 14. B Rinks. Third Round. Trounce (Kaituna) 22 beat Cameron (St, Kilda) 11. Keast (Caledonian) 19 beat Taylor (Sydenham) 13. The main interest on the Dunedin Green in the afternoon centred round the championship rink semi-final between Carswell s Taieri rink and M'Curdy’s St. Kilda rink. Taieri went off with a lead of 3 in the first head, to which St. Kilda replied with a brace on the second. The next two heads gave singles to card, whilst M'Curdy scored 2 on the fifth head. Scores were in and out until the tenth head, when tfho card read 8 all Carswell then scored a 4 and a single, and the score at the fourteenth head was —Carswell 14, M‘Curdy 10. From this stage onwards there was no doubt as to the result. Both teams played admirably, but Carswell s generalship and tho steadiness of his team proved too much for the St. Kilda repre sentatives, and the game ended:—Carswell, 21; M'Curdy, 12. The game between Stevenson and White, played at Kaituna. was very interesting to witness. At the sixth head Stevenson was 6 to White’s 9, while in to the thirteenth head the former added 12 more to ins score, bringing him up to 18. On the sixteenth head White scored 4, making his total 13. On the seventeenth head Stevenson scored 3, and on the eighteenth , White added another to his score, the board then reading—Stevenson 21, White 14. On the nineteenth head Taieri scored 1, while on the twentieth end twenty-first heads White increased his total by 2. During the game White made 2 fine drives, burning the head on each occasion. Beth skips played extremely well throughout. Fourth Day—Saturday. On Saturday morning a commencement was made with the Doubles, and, fortunately, the weather was again fine, and there was no interruption in the day’s programme. Sixteen heads were played, with a time-limit of an hour and three-quarters. The Dunedin Green was in capital order, and the bowling was witnessed by a largo number of spectatore, ' especially in the afternoon. Good progress was made with the Doubles competition. The Championship was carried through to the fifth round. The Kaituna Green was in fine playing order, and considerable interest was manifested in the play throughout the day by the large number of visitors who patronised the green. The Otago Green was very keen, but it looked rather bare in patches. Play was generally most interesting, and occasionally close.

Tho Valley Green gave no evidence of the great soaking it got on Thursday night. The various rinks played well, the bowlers having an interesting and enjoyable day. Mr Sinellie was green umpire, and, with Mr Allen, kept tho score sheet and generally attended satisfactorily to the running of tho tournament. On the Balmacewen Green the condition*; were fairly favourable for good bowling. There was a light wind, but it did not interfere materially with the run of the bowls. There wore several interesting finishes, those between Brown (United. Christchurch) and Pastier (Green Island) in the fourth round of tho Champion Doubles, and Carolin (Mornington) and M'Curdy (St. Kilda) in the C Doubles being particularly so. In the first-named Brown was 3 down and lying 2 with the last bowl to play. By a fine shot he pushed an opposing bowl through, leaving him 4. and the game. In the final head between Carolin and M'Curdy, the last-named was 2 up, and his lead had left a sung head; but the genial Mornington skip was equal to ths occasion, and “dealt” with the head to some purpose, and ended up lying 3. thus winning bv 1 point. This was the mo=t popular win of the day. i Tho games played at Roslyn were highly

interesting, and when play concluded for the day Crowley and Barry were to play off for the green championship. Owing to the bad light this game was postponed till Monday. The St. Kilda Green was playing very well, being exceptionally keen and drawing well on both hands on all the r.inks. Credit is due to the caretaker for giving the players such an excellent green. In the semi-final of the Champion Doubles between Darton and Gillies, although the latter was in the lead and won comtortably, it was a keenly-fought contest, and Gillies, to maintain his position, had to resort to considerable driving. The game between Cress we 11 and Calvert saw the former get away with a good lead, which he maintained right through, and won easily. There was a remarkable game between Ewing and Fruish in the third round of the B Doubles. In an hour and three-quarters they played only eight ends, no less than six ends being burnt by the skips, the score when the bell rang being: Ewing 8, Fruish 4. On the Caversham Green everything went like clockwork, thanks largely to the busi-ness-like methods of the green umpire (Mr F. P. Evans), and play was ail over by 7 o’clock. The green was playing splendidly. It played better in the afternoon after having been rolled, than in the morning. The umpire was called on only once during the day to measure a shot. In another case two shots were so close that the skips tossed up for it. The players at Green Island lost half an hour at midday owing to a collapse in the arrangements that were made for lunch. Otherwise play went on steadily, and the bowlers managed to get back to town shortly after 8 o’clock. Any Lack of attention in the luncheon arrangements was more <than compensated in the afternoon, when the ladies provided an enticing supply of tea and cakes. The green was in lovely order and played well all the day, though one or two of the rinks were inclined to be a little bit tricky. There was an absence of wind, which made the play very pleasant. Nearly all the games weer keenly contested, but in several instances runaway victories wdre obtained. The duties of the umpire (Mr W. Nicolson) were very light. The following are the results; — DUNEDIN GREEN. Championship Doubles. First Round. G. G. Adess and A. Summerell (St. Kilda) won by default from J. North and J. Colline (Caledonian). A. E. The Dunedin Green was played on continuously on Monday in the Doubles competitions, and it was in capital order. Stewart and Campbell (Ashburton) came out winners for the green in the championship section; W. Allan and W. Carswell (Taiori) won the B section, whilst the Kaituna pair, Scott and BailHe came out as green winners of the C Doubles. The arrangements worked very smoothly, no hitch or waste of time occurring. There was a large attendance of spectators, especially in the afternoon. The lady friends of the Dunedin Club dispensed refreshments in the comodious pavilion, the pleasure and convenience of visitors being adequately catered for.

Tho Kaituna Green was in fine playing condition, and some very good play was witnessed throughout the day in the three classes of the Doubles. In the final for tho B Doubles Borland and his partner, though beaten, played a very consistent game, and had, perhaps, the worst of the luck. In tho final for tho green winner in the C Doubles a close finish took place between Hocking and Cole. Up to the last head Cole was 2up Near tho finish of tho head Hocking was lying four shots, but, with his last bowl, Cole drew the shot right on tho kitty, and thus won the gamo by 3 points.

Tho Otago Green was in good order, and the mildness of the day induced a good many visitors to attend the green to watch tho contests. There was only one game necessary in the Champion Doubles to denote the green winner, and this resulted in favour of Balk, who beat Carson rather easily by 17 points to 8. The Nortn-East Valley Green was in fme v order in the forenoon, and played splendidly in the latter part of the day. Ashurst and' H. L. Smith (Otago) came out green winners in tho Championship Doubles, having an easy win over the Smellies’ (Green Jjiland). The latter pair, however, won the B Doubles for the Green Island Club, boating the Sydenham pair, Pritchard and Spillor, by 20 to 16. The defeated pair in tho B Doubles (Pritchard and Spiller) won the C Doubles, tho green furnishing the coincidence of the pair defeated in one competition winning tne subsequent one.

The play on tho Balmaoewen was productive of some excellent games, that between Brown and M’Lachlan in the final for the green in the Champion Doubles being particularly interesting. The Taicifi pair made an auspicious commencement, scoring 6 in the first four heads, Brown having scored only 1. The latter then scored in the succeeding five heads, the game standing: Brown 9, M’Daehlan 6. A 4 to the last-named, was followed by two singles and a 2 to Brown, making the figures, Brown 13 M‘Lachlan 10, with one head to play. Tlie Taieri men, however, were equal to the Occasion, and secured 4, leaving them winners by 1 point, f The final for tho-groon championship was played at Roslyn on Monday morning between Crowlev and D. Barrv. Tho former started oIT well, and at. the third head had scored Bto his opponent’s nil. He continned to forge ahead, an<l at the 11th head his score was 20 to Bary’s 6. Tho latter’s play improved at this stage, and by brilliant play he increased his score to 17, while Crowley only put on 1 ooint. The final score was 21—17, the last head producing some extraordinary clever play. In the B Doubles Scot and Barclay had to play off for green supremacy. This was a very keen game, and Soott succeeded in winning by the narrow margin of 4 points. D. Bary and D. IVlann had to fight out the finish for the green winner in the C Doubles, and this resulted in a win for Mann by 21 points to 10. With four heads to go Bary gave it up, owing to rain commencing to fall. DUNEDIN GREEN. Champion Doubles. GREEN WINNER. J. D. Stewart and D. Campbell (Ashburton! 17 beat, John Scott and A. CHAMPION DOUBLES Green Winners v. Green Winners. The finals in the Champion Doubles, in which the various green winners met in play, wore fought out on the Kaituna Green in the presence of a fair muster of interested spectators, and finally resulted in a win for Gale and Payne (Kaituna), In the first round Allnutt defeated Tail, after a very close game throughout, the pairs tying 15. with one head to go. After a hotly-contested head the Roslyn players finished 2 up. In the second round none of the finishes wore remarkably close, although there was never a big margin between the scores. In the semi-final Campbell gave a fine exhibition of the drawing game in his contest with Smith, and held the other pair comfortably in hand alter the first half-dozen heads had been played. The game between Payne and Crowley was also a good one, both the skips playing with good judgment. Payne, however, had most of the luck, and finished 7 up. In the final between Payne (Kaituna) and Campbell (Ashburton) a fairly interesting game was witnessed up to the twelfth head, when the score waa 11—8 in favour of Payne. From that on the Kaituna pair

made no race of it, and on the nineteenth head Campbell drove, and had the bad luck to give his opponents 5 points, making the score: Payne 23, Campbell 9. Realising the hopelessness of his position, Campbell then decided to retire. Throughout the contest Gale and Payne played first class, but Campbell was handicapped by his lead, who failed to play up to form. In the game between Smith and Crowley, the latter was 5 up on the sixth head, while at the sixteenth head he stood 22 to Smith’s 10. Crowley gained 3 more points, and was 25 at the nineteenth head, while Smith scored 8 points in dhe last two heads, the game finishing with the scores: Crowley 25, Smith 18. Following is the result of the play: First Round. Allnutt (Otago) 17 beat Ta it (Kaituna) 15. ihe winners on the other eight greens had byes. Second Round. Campbell 14 boat Allnutt 11. H L. The contest to find places in the B Doubles competition was fought out on" the Dunedin Green on Monday afternoon, when there was a large attendance of interested spectators Some very fine bowling was witnessed, but with the exception of tho game between Dcy and Soott (Caledonian) and T. _ M'Fadden and J. M'Fadden (Taieri), m whidh tho former won by two points, tho games were more or loss of a lunaway nature. At the same time, although the final scores were rather uneven, the defeated teams, wore not disgraced, Juck at times superseding good play. Bentley (Dunedin) and Scott (Caledonian) and Carswell (Taieri) and Smellio (Green Island) came through to the 'semi-final.
