PAUPERS POISONED

SEVENTY LIVES LOST. BERLIN, A party of paupers at the municipal shelter were poisoned. Fifteen are already dead. It is not known how the poisoning was caused. December 28. paupers succumbed, after partaking of smoked fish. . December 29. Fifty of the paupers who were poisoned are dead. A number died in the streets. The post mortem examination revealed bacterial poisoning. December 31. There were 141 victims of the municipal shelter poisoning, and' of these 70 have died. - It is suggested that the poisoning was due to the presence of copperas on the cooking vessels, but numerous cases are attributed to other causes. The authorities at the shelters have ordered the inmates to destroy the spirits obtained from certain distilleries. * January 1. A chemist has been arrested on a charge of supplying the paupers with drink composed of two-parts of methylated spirits and one part of schnapps. Anti-toxins have been resultless, and the doctors are now of opinion that the trouble is due to alcoholic poisoning.
