SHIPPING SUBSIDIES

PARIS, December 25. The Government has proposed to the Chamber of Deputies that the Republic shall pay a subsidy of 30 millions sterling, to be spread over 25 years, to the Messageries Maritimes Company and to the Societie D’Etudes d« Navigation for mail and other services to the Far East, Australia, East Africa, Brazil, and the River Plate. The bulk of the subsidy is to be devoted to the construction of 19knot steamers, which are to be convertible into auxiliary cruisers in time of war.
