MAORIS AND LIQUOR.
CONTINUANCE CARRIED IN TWO DISTRICTS. NO-LICENSE IN ONE. WELLINGTON, December 19. For the first time the Maori electors of several Maori health districts were able to cast their votes to-day on the liquor question. It was within their power to decide on a bare majority that.liquor must not be supplied to a Native either by a hotel proprietor or an ordinary citizen, the penalty for infringement being a fine not exceeding £IOO. The definition of a " Native " is a wide one, involving halfcastes and all intermediates between these and those of pure blocd. The districts in which this law is applicable as a result of a proclamation by the Governor are the Takitimu, Horotua, and Te Arawa health districts, covering the country between Wairoa and Mohaka (Hawke's Bay) and East Cape to Tauranga and Rotorua, also the Northern Wairoa, a small area around Dargaville. The results to hand are as follow :—Takitimu : Continuance carried by 590 votes to 233 polled for no "liquor. Horotua : No liquor carried by 527 votes to 315 for continuance. Te Arawa : Continuance carried by 443 votes to 131 for no liquor.
