NEW ZEALAND CHAMPIONSHIPS.
CHRISTCHURCH, December 23. The twenty-sixth annual New Zealand Lawn Tennis Championship meeting was opened this morning at Lancaster Park m dull but fairly favourable weather. A. strong easterly breeze was blowing, but as its direction was practically down the courts and not across, it did not cause any great inconvenience. The wind, however, became chilly and disagreeable as the day wore on. Four courts were provided, and these were in good s order, though not fast. Noti a great deal of progress was made in the) morning, some of the courts being vacant nearly all the time. Disappointment was felt at the scratching of the Australians
(N. E. Brookes and R. W. Heath) in the Singles. Brookes had drawn Peacock (New Zealand) as his opponent, and Heath had drawn F. P. Wilson, and the prospect of the appearance of the overseas players, especially of Brookes, had excited keen interest. Following are the results: — MEN'S SINGLES CHAMPIONSHIP. Present champion, J. C.
