LATE SPORTING.

D.J.C. SUMMER, MEETING. FIRST DAY. The sun shone out bright and warm for the first day of the Dunediri Jockey Club's summer meeting yesterday, and there was a good attendance of the public to witness the racing. The course. was en the soft side, and had a tendency to anchor the top-weights, and on that account some of the horses did not quite show the form they have in the past, and probably would have repeated under different conditions. Racing commenced with the Summer Hurdles, in whioh Rifle Range arid Master Paul carried on the running in the early stages, but Gold Pin oaxne at the business end, and won comfortably from Milo. Sharpeye, and Simon Pure fell, but fortunately neither of the riders was injured. Palisade was always prominent in the Salisbury Handicap, and in the early part of the race appeared to have the raoe in his easy keeping, but he had to ' be ridden to gain a verdict from the fast-firiish-in~ Kaimona. Anna Carlovna was the public selection in the Dunedin Handicap, but until half way down the straight it seemed as if her chances were hopeless. Peppin, however, left an opening on the. raijs, and Pine rushed the favourite through, and, after a hard race, won on the post by a neck. Routine was the outsider of the eight whioh faced the starter in the Otago Handicap, and, having the advantage of a light weight, " the aged 1 daughter of Sir Lancelot and Queen of Trumps made most of the running, and won comfortably, although challenged by Waju irwside the distance. Oratava soored a good win in the Trial Stakes, and Stepmeter, whose chance was not particularly well fancied, won the Federal Handicap after stalling off Direotoire at the finish. v Daringdale, another outsider, upset the calculations or backers in the Caversham Handicap, while Fisticuff had a very easy win in the Otokia Welter Handicap.
