A FALSE PROSPECTUS

LONDON, December 20. A. W. Carpenter, of the Charing Cross Bank, who was committed for trial on a charge of obtaining £SOO by means of a' false prospectus two days before his .bankruptcy, has been sentenced to two years' imprisonment in the second division. The failure of the Charing Cross Bank some months ago caused quite a sensation at the time. Carpenter, the proprietor of the bank, started business in 1870, with a capital of £BOO. A partner with £ISOO joined him, but withdrew, losing all his money. Carpenter then styled the business "The Charing Cross Bank." He lost heavily in petroleum investments in Quebeo and in railway and other ventures. The deficit in the estate was, approximately, £1,699,000.
