MANIOTOTO SHOW.

The Maniototo A. and P. Association’s annual show was held on the society’s grounds at Ranfurly on Wednesday. The weather was fine, with a light north-west wind blowing, and, as a matter of course, the residents from far and near gathered to enjoy the day’s outing. For various reasons, among which was the very cold and late season that has been experienced in the district, the members of the society hardly expected that the show would be' as large or as successful as usual, but on the whole these forbodings were not realised. The attendance was fairly good, and there must have been fully 700 people on the ground. The entries in the sheep and light horse sections were good, but there was a falling off in the draught horses and the cattle, With regard to light horses the quality was quite up to the usual standard, and the horses in the best paced hack class were a particularly good lot. There was a very large entry of single harness horses, but with the exception of the first three the quality was poor. The exhibit of sheep was a very good one, and the fat sheep in particular would have been a credit to almost any country show. There were also some splendid half-bred animals forward. Mr J. ,Wilson, of Lauder, was the largest exhibitor and the chief prize-taker. He was well represented in most of the classes, hut his Romneys were specially fine animals. Unfortunately, there was a falling off in the ontrids of cattle, and consequently a great lack of competition. There seemed ground for complaint that the task of judging had been made difficult by the society’s failure to specify in many classes whether it was intended that the cattle should be for beef or for dairy purposes. The quality of the animals was, on the whole, good without being exceptional. The entries for the whole show totalled about 200. Interest during the afternoon centred chiefly in a number of competitions that were carried on in the ring, though some of the loud inevitable cheapjacks attracted quite their fair share of attention. The wrestling on horseback provided some exciting and protracted contests, and the polo race and the jumping wore also well worth watching. An uncatalogued exhibit of an unusual nature was that of Mr ,A. Dyke, of Ranfurly, who had on view a set of hollow concrete building bricks and drain pipes turned out by a plant he has just received from America. These showed a great variety of design, and it is claimed for them that they are cheap and peculiarly suited to the Maniototo district. Among those present "Was the inspector of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Mr Craig), who found all the arrangements for the care of the animals satisfactory. The press representatives were indebted to many of the officials for their courteous assistance, and particularly to the capable secretary (Mr J. Reid) and his assistant (Mr Griffin), whose labours did much to secure the success of the show. An unforupato accident, which, however, might easily have ceen more serious than it was, occurred about 6 o’clock as visitors to the show were driving homewards. A trap pulled up suddenly in front of a four wheeler driven by Mr Alfred Inder, with the result that Mr Inder’s horse swerved off the road, and tipped him out. Mrs Inder and Miss Murray who, with two little boys, were left in the buggy were unable to regain the reins, and the horse swerved violently back again across the road them all out and capsizing the trap against a wire fence. Mr F. Freeman’s motor, car, driven by Mr Cook, was handy, and was kindly placed at the disposal of the victims of the accident. They were all badly shaken and bruised, and in order that a proper examination of their injuries might bo made they were swiftly driven in to Naseby. ; . .. , The following is the prize-list: CATTLE.
