WAIHEMO COUNTY COUNCIL

The usual monthly meeting of the Waihemo County Council was held last Saturday, the following- members being present.— Crs H. O'Neill (chair-man), J. Ross, J. O'Connell, T. Kendall, R, Cameron, H. Bayley, G. Clark, and T. H. Pilbrow. DEPUTATIONS. Mr T. E. Stenhouse waited on the council in re the matter of Anderson's rood. Tho Chairman informed Mr Stenhouse that with regard to his last application the council had instructed the engineer to report, •but the engineer was not yet quite ready to do so, and wished the matter to be referred to the next meeting. The Engineer explained that there was a discrepancy in tho council's survey plans, and it would be necessary to consult tho Survey Office. Mr D. Ross waited on the council in re a deviation on the Taieri Peak road. — It .was resolved that Crs Clark, M'Lennan, Cameron, and the chairman inspect the place and report at next meeting. engineer's bepoet. The Engineer reported that in the BlueMountain Riding the Inch Valley suspension bridge had been satisfactorily completed. An examination had been made of the portion of read near Mr Field's residence and the surfacemen were now engaged on it. The Switch-back road had received attention, and several culverts had been repaired and extended throughout the riding. In the Bushy riding contract No. 16 had been signed, and the work was now being carried out. The gravelling contract at Shag Point would be completed on the 19th inst. In Goodwood foot traffichad been restored! over " The Callum." In the Dunbaok riding wire netting had been erected on the main Glen Valley road, opposite Mr W. Chapman's, for the purpose of safeguarding stock .when being driven. In Green Valley the plank* throughout the district had been tarred and Mr M'Donald's road had received attention. The engineer recommended that plans and specifications should be prepared for extending the balance of the Government grant in protective works at Bluff crossing, and also a small groin opposite M'Lennan's woolshed. Plans and specifications for spending tho Government grants of £2OO and £4OO had met with the approval of the district engineer, and these would be laid before the council at its next meting.—The report was adopted. CORRESPONDENCE. The resignation of tho surfaceman at Macraes was received, and the action of the chairman and the representative of the riding in having another , immediately appointed, was approved. Replies were received from a number of councils with regard to the communie** tion in re the expenditure of the Hospital and Charitable Aid Board.—The Chairmat explained that as they- themselves were the first movers in the matter it was or tho council to say now what was to be done.—• Or Clark and the chairman were appointed delegates to convene a meeting of those appointed by the various public bodies igr terested in the Charitable Aid Board. ft was also resolved to send the circular to tM Palmerston Borough Council, whio'h haSt been inadvertently overlooked at the time the circular was issued. GENERAL. The engineer, Mr Butt, was appointed mining valuer for the ensuing year, an allowance of £5 being accorded him. Mr D. Cameron was appointed ranger for the county. . The dog-tax for the year ending December 31, 1912, was fixed at 2s 6d for sheep and cattle dogs, and at 7s 6d for all other dogs. The tender of James Mou- for the supply, replating, etc. of dog collars, was accepted. RIDING ACCOUNT. A return laid on the table by the showed the riding balances on September 30 to be as follows:-—Blue Mountain ridin«- dr. £350 7s 8d: Moadowbank riding, dr"'£l27 7s 7d; Bushy riding, dr. £452 16a 2d; Goodwood riding, dr. £315 18s 8d; Dimback riding,- dr. £lOl 12s Ad ; Green \ alley riding."~dr. £563 4s 7d; Macraes ridmg, cr". £531 12s 6d. chairman's expenses. In accordance with notice of motion, Cr O'Connell moved to rescind the resolution passed at the previous meeting of the council, that the chairman receive the actual expenses incurred by him when travelling on county business in lieu of the fixed honorarium.—Cr Bayley seconded the motion.—Cr Pilbrow. the mover of the previous resolution, explained that he had-been, under a misapprehension and did not wish to oppose the present motion in any sharid or form. Cr Ross, the seconder of the previous resolution, said that it was he himself who had suggested it, and he still stood to it. He thought it was not wortn two guineas a day.—On being put the motion was carried. —Cr Bayley then moved that the chairman's honorarium be fixed at two guineas a meetinsr. After some discussion this was carried by six votes to 2 Cr Ross moved to limit members to thenbare expenses, but the motion lapsed for want of a seconder. Accounts amounting to £2OO 13s 8d were passed for payment.
