WOOL SALES.

FIRST OF THE LOCAL SERIES. GOOD COMPETITION. The first wool sale of the season was held in the Art Gallery Hall yesterday, when the total offering amounted to 5067 bales. The individual catalogues are given in the order in which they were sold : i_ .. Bales. Donald Held & Co 855 Otago Parmer's Co-op. Association 595 Dalgety & Co 1453 Wright, Stephenson & Co „, „. 955 N.Z. Loan & Mercantile Ag-ency Co 217 Stronach, Morris & Co , ,*, 350 National Mortgage & Ag-ency Co ~ 642 The total offering for the corresponding sale of last year was 8072 bales. The shortage this year is attributed to the unsettled state of the weather during the last few weeks interfering with shearing operations. . There was an exceptionally large number of buyers from all the chief" manufacturing countries of the world, and the- sale went with a swing from start to finish, very few lots being passed in. One very noticeable feature was the American competition. Whenever lots of bright Romney or super crossbred wools came under the hammer it was quite apparent that America was topdog. Farmers who own light-conditioned, bright, strong, crossbred wools should bo most careful in the general get-up of their clips, as otherwise they may, through a little carelessness, debar American competition altogether. It might be stated that the wool from the majority of the Otago districts is in decidedly, better, condition than last season, bping lighter in . grease, stronger in the staple, and better grown. There were, of course, exceptions to thi3 rulo. Hereunder will be found a comparison between the prices of the December sales of 1910 and 1911: —
