HAWEA FLAT.

December 14. —The weather during the past season has been unusually cold and boisterous,, with an almost continuous succession of heavy gales and frequenu showers of rain and sleet. There is little indication of a change at the- time of '■ writing. Shearing has been considerably delayed, but late rains have materially improved the prospects for grain-growers. Some splendid crops of barley, wheat, and) j oats are to be seen, but there are also E several blanks, and the average return \ will hardly be as high as that of other years, . i Wakatipu Seat.—As was anticipated, Mr ; Horn secured a very heavy majority of | votes on this side of Queenstown; but the i southern end of the electorate decided the • oontest in favour of Mir Fraser. Considering the mapner in which other electorates have decided against Liberal candidates, the large number of votes oast in favour of Mr Horn may be regarded as a splendid tribute- to his personal worth; and all who take an interest in the advancement of L the Otago Central railway will regret that ■ its strongest and, most unselfish advocate j failed to head the poll. i County Election. —In the election of a ‘ councillor for Hawea Riding, Mr M‘Car thy i obtained 52 votes against 25 recorded for Mr J. M'Lennan. I Scholastic. —The local school breaks un for the Christmas holidays on the 15th inst., and on that date tine prizes won j are to be distributed and a picnic held on the domain. I have not heard full parti - I culars of the yearly examination, but unI derstand that excellent results were oh- ■ tainsd by the children under Miss Ewart’s cave. ; Tennis.-—Up to the present- the Hawea Tennis Club has played two-matches against that of Luggafce. In Ixith events the local players were unsuccessful, but a great im- ; provement in the play is noticeable this ’ season, tire- result of fairly constant practice. —-. • , Greetings.—To the editor, staff, and readers the old wish of a merry Christmas ; and a bright and happy New Year.
