AMERICAN MINING DISASTER

VANCOUVER, December 12, At B-riceville (Tennessee) five menwera rescued alive from the Cross Mountain mine, and 22 bodies have been recovered. There are numerous cross galleries as yet unentered. It is believed there are. 100 dead. A rescue car has arrived from Pitts--burg, and an effort will be made to enter the mine in every direction. NEW YORK, December 13. Canaries which were utilised in tha Cross Mountain mine showed that th« deadly gases were still strong. A few more bodies have been recovered. I The fire broke out a second time, and ' all hope is abandoned of saving the remaining miners. Numerous messages have been found scrawled on the walls of the mine, indicating that the victims were being driven further in because of tha fatal gas. Thirty-eight bodies have bee» | found.
