AN UNCHARTED MENACE. According to the opinion of a well-known Piaster mariner, the Ulimaroa's propeller did more than one shipmaster a good turn tohen it located the uncharted rock at the entrance to Bluff Harbour during her recent visit to that port. Our informant recalls the. fact that nearly half a dozen steamers have suffered minor damage through striking some unknown object, and in practically every instance the official dictum has. been accepted in preference to the assertions of the vessel's commanders that they had kept within the channel limits. The presence of the rock located by the Ulimaroa will thus serve to vindicate those navigators who, in bowing to official decisions, have nevertheless steadfastly maintained they were not in error. A very strong current runs in and out of Bluff Harbour between tides, and it appears to have been a generally-accepted view that when a steamer touchedi anything whilst werkintr the port the tidal current had carried her further out of the fairway than her commander imagined. The result of these findings has been that captains of large vessels have been permitted to use their own discretion should they desire to work the port only at slack water. . The position of this newly-found rock is officially stated to be about 100 ft south of the line of the green and. white beacon lights, and the outer pile beacon bears from it north 2odeg E., distant 400 ft, the rocky patch being about 50ft long by 2.oft wide, with a depth at low water spring tides of only 20ft. Although quite a number of vessels are believed to have touched this rock, it seems little short of marvellous that no serious mishaps have ever occurred there, and it is cause for congratulation that this particular rock has at last been officially located at such small cost.
