Commenting on the terms demanded by Dick Arnst for a match on the Thames with Ernest Barry, the English Sportsman (files of which are to hand) says : "If Arnst persists in his demand for £750 expenses to meet Barry, we fear that it will prove a stumbling block to a match. The New ZeaJander appraises himself highly, but must remember that in visiting England he is unquestionably taking a greater risk of losing the championship than if the match were rowed in home waters."
