NEW YORK, October 17

A report from Santa Barbara (California) states that 26 sticks-of. dynamite were discovered on the Southern Pacific Railways Company's steel ...bridge before the passing of President Taf t's train. A fired shots at a suspicious looking character who was loitering .near the track, and afterwards investigated and found the dynamite. The affair is believed to have a connection with the strike of shopmen employed on the railroad.

President Taft was not informed of the discovery. SANTA BARBARA (Gal), October 18. It is now discovered that President Taft's train actually passed over the dynamite that had been laid on the Southern Pacific track. The watchman's appearance alone prevented the miscreant completing his preparations for an explosion.
