The agricultural and pastoral statistics this year are being taken by post, and the enumerator for the Otago district (Mr Walter. Miller}, has .for some time past been engaged with an augmented clerical staff in preparing the necessary return forms, which were posted to farmers on the 16th. The information required is in reference to the .acreage an corn and other crops. In connection with the collection of these statistics, the following motion on the subject was passed unanimously at. the conference of delegates from the agricultural societies throughout the Dominion, which was held in Wellington in September last: '' That, this .conference, haying conferred with the - Minister of Agriculture on the subject, expresses the hope that the farming community will "give every facility to the department in collecting the statistics." 'A Timaru message reports that.the committee of the Chamber of Commerce has resolved to support the Dunedin Chamber in urging the Government to lay a new cable between Melbourne and Bluff, and also to support the movement for through inter-islajid booking by rail and steamer.
