GOLDEN WEDDING.
The golden wedding of Mr and Mr John Winton, 77 Leith street, was die crated in the Otago Early Settlers' Hall on Monday, September 25, when a pleasant gathering took place in honour of the ocmnion. The members of the family weivwell represented, coming l from Australia and all parts of New Zealand for the celebrations. These included Mr Walter Winton and Mr Robert Winton, from Melbourne; Mr James Winton and wife, and Miss Maggie Winton, from Palmerston North; Mrs Jameson and Mr David. Winton. Oamaru; Mrs Jas. Bain, sister of Mrs Winton, Wellington; ,and Mrs Hireland and husband, from Invcrcargill. Ainonn the guests was the Rev. W. Saunders, who attended the golden wedding celebrations of Mrs Winton's parents (Mr. and Mrs Sims) 16 years ago. The worthy oouplfl were married by tihe Rev. Thomas Burn* (a passenger in the Philip Laing) in 1861 aj Dunedin, and Mrs A: R. Livingstone (nea Burns), another fellow-passenger, was pre* sent at the gathering. A verv large number of congratulatory cables and telegrams were received, even from as far as China. A pleasant surprise for the honoured coupX© was sprung on them by the Rev. W. launders, when, on his making a con,, -.tulatory speech, it took the form of a well filled purse of sovereigns, subscribed by the members of the family and a few intimate friends, and he paid a high tribute to the recipients, on the fact that their life had been marked by such faithful performance of parental duties, and that their children could now rise up and call them blessed; for though they had' seven sons and two. daughters, yet they were not center* t, but' <ba;d also adopted two daughtera Mr Winton, in reply, said it was pleasant for Mts Winton and himself to meet sc many' friends on the occasion, and, be a Philip Laing passenger, it was appropriato that the gathering took place in the Otaco Early , "Settlers' Hall, also that the best man and bridesmaid who assisted at the oerempjiy, on the original occasion were both present. that evening. These were Mr ivilgour and Mrs Jas. Bain (nee Sim), an many fellow-passengers by the Philip Laing and Strath fields ay were present.
