The member for Timaru (Mr Craigie) has persistently urged upon the Government the desirability and the importance of preparing this information. He has now been informed by the Minister of Agriculture that instructions will be given" to officers of the departments immediately to prepare tlie necessary schedules. The census will be taken through the agency of the past, the scihed'ules being delivered to farmers, sheepfarmers, and settlers throughout the Dominion by post and returned by them to the department. Provision will be made in the schedules for the statement of the acreage eown in oereate, grass, roots, etc. They will be issued next month, and are to be returned next month. The taking of tJhe census by means of the post will effect a saving of over £6OOO, the expenditure required when the schedules were delivered and collected by enumerators.
