NORTH OTAGO WINTER MEETING (From Ode Special Reporter.) First Day—Wednesday, May 24.

The North Otago Jockey Club's meeting was commenced- in fine but wintry weather, and tlhiere was an excellent attendance. The track provided good going and the card some interesting sport. Obsono was the only favourite to score, and fairly large dividends were common. The sum of £6643 was put through the totalisator, or £2544 in excess of last year's figures. Going along the back, My Lawyer gradually lost his position, whilst Thistledown and Sombrero were nearest the leader, and St. Aidan lay second last. At the far turn Lupulite was over four lengths clear of the field, but shortly after entering the straight ho had Mumura in. close attendance, whilst St. Aidan and Cronstadt had made up a lot of ground. In the run home Mumura drew out, and beat Thistledown by two lengths, with Countermine third a length away and half a length in front of Mv Lawyer, who, after losing his place on the rails, came with a good run on the outside. Prior to the chief event My Lawyer unseated J. Beale, and cantered about the course before being captured. In the race he got shut out at a critical moment, and the piece of bad luck cost him the race. Thistledown piloted the way to the straight, where Gold Coin joined the leaders and shutting out My Lawyer when less than a furlong from home, took charge of affairs. The ordsr past the stand again wae Lovell, Winchester, Eldorado, Corazon, Eurus, and Mabara. Winchester fell at the gorse fence, and Lovell dropped out, Eldorado and Corazon coming on together. At the last jump Corazon drew away, and, in a fine struggle down the straight, won, under the whip, by a neck, Mount Cook being three lengths further buck, and Lovell, Eurus, Mainara, and Castout in that order.
