FOR THE WOMEN OF OTAGO

THE £4OOO MARK PASSED. Another £SO subscription for the Hospital Fund was received on May 24, this time through Father Coffey, who handed over that amount from the Roman Catholic congregations at St. Joseph's, the North-East Valley, and South Dunedin. The Peninsula Ferry Company, desiring in. some way to further the scheme, generously offered to run an excursion down the harbour, and to devote the entire proceeds therefrom to the object in view. This offer was, however, by no means largely availed of. Further pleasing progress was apparent in the Women's Ward Fund on May 25. A very handsome donation of £34 Is 6d was received from the Chinese residents of the city and one of £lO 2s 6d from the Mosgiei Woollen .. 'Company's employees. The excursion down the harbour on the Walreka on Wednesday realised £2 Bs, and to this the directors of the Peninsula Ferry Company added the sum of £2 16s, bringing the proceeds of the excursion up to five guineas. It has been decided by the management to close the fund on Saturday, by which time it is confidently expected that the desired £SOOO will have been obtained. The benefit performances of " The Gondoliers" during the three nights have resulted in over £IOO accruing to the fund. A gratifying feature in connection with the performance is that the hands engaged in the front of the house, also the stage hands, generously donated part of their salaries to the fund. • The Port Chalmers list now stands at jF-11'5 Is 44

We are asked to explain, in order to clea*" away misapprehensions that have arisen, that the sum of £lO5 subscribed by the Freemasons owning allegiance to the New Zealand Constitution is the gift of the Dunedin Freemasons under the Grand Lodge of New Zealand, and is not contributed out of the funds of the Grand Ledge. The nurses of the Dunedin Hospital, aided by the medical students, have decided to .give entertainments on Wednesday and Thursday evenings to assist in the obtaining of funds for the new King Edward Memorial Ward. The programme promises to be an exceedingly good. one. As the tickets have been selling rapidly the success of the entertainment is assured. THE SUBSCRIPTIONS.
