BOXING.

BOXING IX EBNiMENT. There was another splendid attendance at His Majesty's Theatre on Tuesday evening, when the concluding bouts of the tournament held under the auspices of the Otago Amateur Boxing Association were got off. Mr R. Cook, of Timaru, was referee, and Messrs T. Gillies and C. Batt judges. The competitions were of three rounds each, cf three minutes' duration. Mr S. S. Myers presided, and commented on the excellent manner in which the Otago tournaments were being • conducted. He was glad to be able to say that their tournaments were as well conducted as, if net better those under the management of the nortnern associations. The following are the results; — FEATHER-WEIGHTS (9st). Final. M. Leckie (Bst 121 b) beat A. Lane (9st). In the first round a good exhibition of boxing was given by both men, Leckie, however, showing the greater science. Lane was inclined to hang on in the clinches. Leckie did most of the leading in the second round, and kept his opponent well on the move, getting in several nice straight lefts. In the third round Leckie used a good left very effectively and gave his game opponent a bad time on the ropes, gaining the verdict in a spirited contest amidst great applause. The Port Chalmers boxer also came in* for applause for his plucky showing. NOVICE (9st 71b). Semi Final.

E. Brownlie (9st 71b) beat J. M'Auliffe (9st 41b). R. Andrews a bye.

Brownlie did all the fighting in the first round. M'Auliffe being poor both in attack and defence. Both men were very tired when the gong went. The Invercargill boxer stuck well to his man in the next round, but Brownlie swung a strong right several times to his opponent's head. In the last round M'Auliffe took a lot of punishment, simply walking into right and left swings, a vigorous bout going to Brownlie, who shows promise with experience of developing into a good boxer. Finai!. Brownlie hurt his hand and was unable to compete in the final, Andrews winning by default. - MIDDLE-WEIGHT (list 41b). Final.

B. Finnic (lOst 131 b) beat P. Lister (list 41b). G. Mathewson was scratched owing to an injured hand, and J. Gleeson did not put in an appearance. This contest did not develop a great deal of science, Finnic being a boxer of the tearaway order. He did most of the leading, but both of the boxers did some very vigorous in-fighting. The close of the second round saw the two hard at it, Finnic getting the best of the exchanges. Finnic, who looked the more powerful man of the two, continued the more aggressive in the final 'round, though Lister proved himself full of grit and took a lot of punishment in a most gcod-natured contest. NOVICE (lOst 91b). Semi Final. C. Edwards (lOst 91b) beat W. Moir (lOst 91b). J. Munro a bye. The first round did not provide anything sensational, and the same remark applies to the second round, Edwards • being most in evidence in the leading done. A lot of clinching took place in the last round, an interesting contest going to Edwards. Final. Edwards (lOst 91b) beat-Munro (lOst 51b). A willing contest in the fis;st round saw Edwards having the advantage, he getting in several good upper cuts. Munro took a lot of punishment in the gamest manner in the second round, and also in the third round, but was at times inclined to rough it. Edwards won easily on points. EXHIBITION BOUT. Dave Smith v. W. M'Lennan. .

The New Zealander pave a beautiful ex- I hibition of. sparring during the course of a spirited four rounds, each being of two minutes. Before commencing the exhibition Smith demonstrated how the American i boxer Clabby executes his famous loop-the-loop. Smith showed neat footwork, while his quickness in his deliveries with both hands, his smothering, and his ducking were also loudly applauded. LIGHT-WEIGHT (lOst). Semi Final. W. North (9st 101 b) beat R. J. Young (Sst 101 b). M. Leckie a bye. . i The first round \proved uninteresting. North did practically all the boxing .that eventuated in the second, while in the third the referee stopped the bout and awarded the contest to North. Young, who hails from Oama,ru, has a unique style. Final W. North (9st 131 b) beat M. Leckie (Bst 121 b). j North proved too strong for his op- ' ponent, _ and had the best of several fine rallies in the first round. In the penultimate _ meeting North did most of the attacking, Leckie, however, boxing very cleverly. The third round saw an excellent exhibition of boxing, both men shaping finely in several exchanges and being loudly applauded at the conclusion of the contest.

HEAVY-WEIGHT. Semi Final. N. Moloney (12st 21b) beat P. M'Quarrie (12st 101 b). E. Smith a bye. The first round saw a very vigorous set to with, however, a lot of clinching. Both men made things lively in the second round, Moloney having if anything the best of the exchanges. In the third round M'Quarrie used a very hefty left and wiped off a lot of his back points, but the iudges ruled not sufficient to give him the fight. Final. N. Moloney (12st 21b) beat E. Smith (list 61b). The first round proved rather unsatisfactory, little boxing being indulged in Smith forced matters in the second round, Moloney being handicapped by the results of his previous encounter with M'Quarrie. A tame third round saw the fight go to Moloney.
