MOSGIEL BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The first meeting of the newly-elected Council of the Borough of Ivlosgiel was held on the Ist. The members present were the Mayor (Mr H. H. Inglis), Crs M. Brown, G. M'Leod, F. Seaton, Thomas Aitken, Jas. Callender, Thomas Williams, J. Hendry, and J. Souter. The last two were new members, the others having been re-elected to office. The Mayor, on taking the chair, congratulated the councillors on their election, and expressed the hope that they would woil; together amicably, so that at the end of their term of office, by their united efforts, the welfare of the borough would he advanced. —(Applause.) CORRESPONDENCE. Mrs Janet Guthrie applied for water connection to her section in Glasgow street. —• Referred to Works Committee, with power to act. « T. Collie and John Lindsay applied for connections to the sewerage system. —-Consideration postponed until new committees-, are appointed. The Secretary of the Fire Brigade (J. White) asked for a grant of £3O to purchase more hose and a hydrant, and asking what was being done in- the direction of erecting a now room. —The Mayor said the £3O was available and the plans and specification® for the room were ready.—Referred to the incoming Finance Committee. The Minister of Railways, replying to an application by the council for removal of the railway station, wrote that the present site was most suitable for railway purposes, and that a removal would involve considerable expenditure, consequently th© outlay would not be authorised. —Cr Souter moved—“ That the letter be received and the clerk write to the Hon. J. A. Millar informing him that the council is not satisfied that he is fully informed of the town’s requirements, and requests that he name a date for receiving a deputation to lay the council’s views before him and to ask for further consideration of the request, the deputation to comprise the Mayor, and Crs Cneyne, Aitken, M‘Lcod, Williams, Seaton, and the mover.”—Seconded by Cr Brown, and carried. REPORTS. ijie Treasurer reported payment since last report of £33 Is, and recommended payments amounting to £54- 18s 3d. —• Adopted. The Inspector reported that in April Gordon road had been repaired, ditches and water channels cleaned out, and sewers inspected and flushed. A portion of the sower in Montrose street leaked in several places. The decking on the quary bridge needed repairs, but he suggested that only temporary repairs bo carried out Until a concrete top was put on. There was plenty of water in the Silverstream, and he recommended that woodwork at the septic tank be tar painted. —Referred to the first meet-, ing of the new council. GENERAL. D. F. Gibson applied for renewal of his slaughtering license. —Granted on the usual conditions. The Town Clerk submitted a list of alterations to the ratepayers’ roll, adjustments of valuations, ami additions to valuations. —Approved. Constable Finlay was appointed collector l of hawkers’ and cab license fees. The meeting then adjourned until Wednesday next at 8.15 p.an., when ibstal-
lation of Mayor and the appointment of committees -will take place.
