GOLF.

BY BCJLGEH.

Perfect golfing weather prevailed on Saturday, when the Otago Club got off the first hound of their charapionsnip. The recent rains have improved the course wonderfully, .and tho existing conditions were much appreciated by players. It was quite a treat to be able to take out a good divot with one’s irons. Owing, no doubt, to want of practice, many players overlooked the necessity for replacing turf so cut. The matches, with few exceptions, were keenly contested, and those, who tried to predict the winner in the various games were sadly astray, as recent form in many instances went for nothing. An unusual feature of Saturday’s, play was the downfall of the Smith brothers. The family was represented l by B. J., H. C., R. J., and E. C., only one of whom, B. J., is still left to do battle for their house. Pie is playing up to his best form just now, and will most likely prove the eventual winner. H. C. has been devoting most of his spare time during the summer to a motor launch in which he is interested, and consequently succumbed rather easily to H. A. Salmon by 4 and 2. W. J. Wratt, by steady play, rather unexpectedly downed R. J. Smith by 4 and 3. Erroll Smith was beaten by W. H. Young by 4 and 2. C. A. Turnbull has been playing in tip-top from lately, and having easily annexed the Smith Cup (the best aggregate gross score for two rounds) a fortnight ago, it was thought he would have no difficulty in beating H. J. Gould. He had to strike his colours, however, Gould winning on the last groan. This young player has come on remarkably the last few months, and as he has the golfing temperament in a marked dtegree, should do bettor later on. He has a line easy style, his weak point at present being his short approach. B. J. .Smith easily accounted for J. Fotheringham by 6 up and 4 to play. Andrew Todd seems to revel in matches of this sort. He put up a fine performance on Saturday, doing the round in 80 and. beating Park 2 up. He admits he had what luok there* was going, but, 'nevertheless, he can still show most of the younger players how to fight out a tough game. Drasch and Stronach had a tough battle, and it looked odds on Stronach after the fourteenth, where he was 2 up. Brasoh, however, finished brilliantly, getting three 3’s in the last four holes, thus winning an interesting match on the last green. The draw for the second round (played Saturday. 22nd inst.) is—C. W. Rattray v. H. J. Gould, A. Todd v. W. H. Young, W. J. Wratt v. B. J. Smith, H. A. Salmon v. H. Brasch. The usual Senior Monthly Medal Match of the St. Clair Ladies’ Gold Club will be played to-morrow. Following is the draw: Miss Burt v. Mrs Dick, Mrs Lough v. Miss B. Glendining, Miss Fynmore v. Miss Saxon Smith. Miss Hcgarty v Mrs Milne, Mrs Isaacs v. Mrs Smith, Mrs Kahlenberg v. Miss Nixson. Miss Fotheringham v. Mrs M'Carthy, Mrs Gilray v. Miss Taine, Miss Glendining a bye.
