OTAGO FOOTBALL ASSOCIATION.

The twenty-first annual meeting of the Otago football Association was hold on Monday evening in the Trades Hall. Mr S. S. Myers, president of the association sine© its inception occupied the chair, a large number of delegates being present. The annual report (already publisned) was taken as read, and the balance sheet, showing a debit balance of £l7 6s 9d in the general fund, and a credit balance (invested at 3 2 per cent.) of £205 3s lid in the grounds fund, was read. The Chairman moved the adoption of the report and balance sheet. It was, he said, gratifying to be able to say that at tho close ol the twenty-first year the game was still in a flourishing and progressive condition. It had not progressed so rapidly as he had imagined 21 years ago it would, but he hoped that it would still improve until it attained here the same relative importance that it occupied in the Old Country. The finances were not so healthy as might ba desired, and attention would have to be given to improving the position. The newly inaugurated third grade schools’ competition had proved a highly successful one, and he congratulated the Christian Brothers team upon being the first winner of the banner. The visit of a New South Wales team this year would give a Blip to the game. The Otago Association had sent a fairly good .teanh to fight for the Brown Shield last season, but that team had not had the fortune to win it. , The shield however, was now in Canterbury, and he hoped this year it would be brought further south. He referred in terms of regret to the loss the game had sustained through the death of a vice-president (Dir Nisbet). The executive had laboured earnestly to keep the game pure, and whilst some present might consider some of the sentences rather severe, stringent measures were necessary to keep tire game clean and healthy. The Reserves Committee of the Dunedin City Council has promised to do something towards the improvement of grounds, and, he (the speaker) trusted the association would have a prosperous and happy season. Mr J. F. Arnold, M.P., vice-president, seconded the motion. He congratulated the executive upon its administration, and urged the young players to loyally support the association. The Rev. Bro. Brady and Mr H. J. Duncan also spoke. The former, referring fo the progress of the sport, instanced the Christian Brothers’ School, where five years ago the word “ soccer ” was unknown, whilst this year it was expected five teams would be entered. Both referred to the splendid service Mr S. S. Myers had rendered to the game during his 27 years as president. Reference, was also made to the excellent .work done by the schools’ secretary, Mr T. H. Broomfield. The motion was carried. Mr T. H. Broomfield, secretary of the Schools’ Association Committee, wrote outlining’ an improved scheme for the management of football in the schools.—At the suggestion of the chairman the letter was referred to the incoming committee for. careful consideration.
