WELLINGTON, April 10. A sub-committee of the Wellington City Council has for some time been conferring with a representative of the ' general labourers in the council's employ in reference to the demands for higher -wages. The conierence has now proved abortive, the Mayor having stated to-night that the committee was unable to decide the question : what is a living wage ? They must let the Arbitration Court decide that point, and whatever the court eaid was a living wage the council would be pre*pared to pay.
