UNIVERSITY COUNCIL.

The regular meeting of the University I Council, postponed from the previous day, I was held on the 4th inst., and was attended by the Chancellor (Mr Jas. Allen, M.P.), Drs Shand, Church, the Revs. Pro- ! feasor Hewitson and Cameron, the Hon. , J. R. Sinclair, Messrs J. Roberts, J. H. Walker, L. Harris, D. Stewart, and T. K. Sidey, M.P. The Finance Committee reported that I the bank overdraft after cheques for accounts had been drawn would bo £1125. About £1450 of Government money was still to come to hand. Fifty-two applications had been received for the position of Registrar, and 21 names had been selected to be considered at a special .meeting on the 3rd inst. A report of this meeting stated that £27 15s 2d had been given to Dr Bcnham for the museum from Mr John Ewing, St. Bathams; and that Misa Sparrow had been granted £lO for overtime and extra work. Out of 21 names five had been selected for submission to the Council for final selection for the position of Registrar.— Adopted. The Medical Committee reported that there had been three applicants for the position of lecturer on medicine in the Dental School, and Dr Stuart Moore had been appointed.—Adopted The Home Science and Domestic Arts Committee recommended that the school be named '' Home Science and Domestic Arts;" that application be made to the Education Dopairtment to recognise the classes as "College Classes" under the act; that the Chancellor and vice-chan-cellor confer with the Education Board on the question of practical cookery teaching ; that the fees to be charged be referred to the Chancellor, the Vice-chan-cellor, and Dr Shand, with power to act. The committee reported that the Citizens Committee had agreed to the University Council using £IOO provided for research travelling for tlio following purposes : —£2s for equipment, and £75 for fitting up rooms for the professor and the classes.—Adopted. The Clerical Staff Committee recommended that Miss Sparrow's application for nine months' leave of absence be granted, subject to her finding a locum tenons to the satisfaction of the Chancellor. The committee submitted letters from the Registrar, and recommended the council to accept his resignation as from the 31st March. The committee regretted that the failing health of the Registrar had caused him to tender his resignation, and recommended the council to pay him six months' salary as an allowance on his retiring from office.—Adopted, with the exception of the payment, of the allowance to the Registrar on his retirement, on which matter the solicitor was to be consulted. The Registrar of the New Zealand University forwarded a resolution that the council make arangements to conduct and control the discipline at the capping ceremony. —It was decided that the council undertake the arrange mentis as desired; and further that a copy of the letter from the Registrar be sent to the Committee in Discipline with a request that it should report to next meeting.. Dr Marshall, chairman of the Professorial Board, wrote irecommonding Gerald C. Beattie for the Beverly entrance scholarship, and John Stuart Reid for the Gray Russell Scholarship. It was resolved that Mr Beattie be granted the Beverly entrance

scholarship, and that Mr Reid be granted the Gray Russell scholarship. Dr Marshall also notified that the examinations for the Richardson and Womens' scholarships would be held next week, and suggested that a committee consisting of the Chancellor and the Rev. Professor Hewitson be appointed to consider the recommendations of the Professorial Board. — The Chancellor and the Rev. Professor Hewiteon were empowered to act.
