POLAR EXPLORATION.

LONDON, April 4. Sir E. Shackleton has appealed for financial assistance for Dr Mawson's expedition. April 6. Dr Maws on announces that his expedition must leave this year. The arrangements for a ship and equipment have been completed, but cannot be ratified until the Australian Oommittee cables the preliminary expenses. " STOCKHOLM, April 5.

Captain Amundsen has -written to the committee of the Fram expedition apologising for not communicating his changed plans. His reason for secrecy was liis apprehension lest the committee should endeavour to dissuade him. The motive for the change was the hope of the discovery of the iSouth Pole and to induce his countrymen to accord sufficient financial support for a dash for the North Pole.
