NEW ROAD BALCLUTHACLYDEVALE.

At Friday s meeting of the Clutha County Council Cr Mitchell- brought forward the matter of operung up a new road up the west side of the Clutha River to Clvdevalo trom Balclutha. Seeing that tho Governmeat had refused a railway, he thought they should provide tho settlers with "an outlet in the shape of a road. At present they had) to go many miles round over 3. road that was not very good, and since the district was now closely settled it was highly necessary that the settlers should! have a better and more direct outlet than they now had. The district had never applied to the Government for a penny, and he thought, they had a just claim for a grant for this road. Since the railway had been refused a strong agitation had sprung up for the road, and largely-signed petitions w<ould be in in a day or two. Besides providing an outlet for Clydevale, a good many settlers at Te Houka would also be benefited. He would move—''That application he made to the Government for a grant of £2000." Cr Saunders was of the opinion that the Government should provide money for this read. Cr Quin seconded the motion, and said if the Government would not give a railway it should give a road. This, he pointed .ut, would complete the "missing link"' in the arterial highway to Wanaka, and give a, level road via. the Clutha Vcillev, the whole way. The Provincial Council had madie the road up' through the goldfields, and tho Government should' complete the. connection by opening un the few miles between Balclutha and Clydevale. The settlers at Clydevale certainly required a better outlet than they now had. He mentioned a ease at Glenkenich, where the Government had refused a railway, but provided a road, and they should do so in tftiis case. Thn .motion wds married, with an acldi-

tion pointing out that the road would complets the level correction between Batclutha and Wanaka.
