Residents of Heriot and distinct are endeavouring to .secure a guarantee of £4OO a year to tempt a medical man to sett!** in their midst. A man named George Shotlander was fined £ls in January last at Napier for betting with infants (three young Maori sirls). He did not. pay the fine, and disappeared. On Wednesday last he was eeen on the Maitai at Wellington by Detective C&esells, and was promptly arrested anc lodged in the Terrace Gaol to serve tIK default sentence of one month's imprisonment.
