PALMERSTON NORTH NOTES.

September 19. Dear Pasquin,—The elocutionary contest* which occupied the Opera House for thre« nighta last week, brought out some vers promising talent. T.he extraordinary sue. ces3 of Mr Byron Brown and his son and (laughter was a feature of the proceedings, between them this elcver Otaki family winning no lors than five test?. The ShakeSiberian efforts of Mr Brown ware quite a treat. The attendance throughout was satisfactory, and ii is the intention- of the Technical" Schcol Executive to hold an-

other competition before long. Mr T. Lindsay Buick (Danuevirke) carried out the duties of judge in a capable manner. Quite a record for this town in the way of amusements took place lost week, when no les* than two baxaars, a flower show, and tV» before-mentioned contests taking place -to the same night, and all seemed to nave- a good share of patronage from the publfa Borough Pictures showing to fair business. The plant is now in good working order, and Harry Muller (manager) intends giving the public good pictures. Hay wards once more back to their old stand, and this week's lot of films are voted the best ever presented to the pictureloving public here. Result, bumper houses and that lock of worry entirely missing on Manager Woon's countenance. The National Carnival and Bazaar, which ran a week, was a huge success. The affairs not being settled up yet, I cannot state the amount cleared, but it will be something very handsome. Some very good dancing was carried out by a large number of children. Miss Riki Wood did a number of skirt dances, and this young talented lady's brother, Mr Marshall Wood, showed the" public that he is quite an adept in the sleight of hand business, some of his tricks 'being neatly and skilfully presented. MacMahons have been making the hoardings quite conspicuous with their JohnsonKctchell clash posters, the said show to appear in Opera House on Friday of this week. The Choral Society have made a start practising the oratorio "Elijah," the work to make its public appearance about, Christmas. Mr Maurice Cohen wields the baton. The society has secured the be6t singers in the district, so a good production should eventuate. Syd. Barrow, who. with his compact little •>lant, supplied the current at Hayward's temporary picture house, has been engaged by Fullers to go on circuit with their touring picture company. The whole plant, weighs just lOcwt, so that it is easily handled. During the absence of the engineer from Ins plant some person tried to wreck the dvna.mo attaohed to Borough Pictures last Thursday night. A stone had been placed under one of the brushes, but by good luck was discovered before any daniage was done. Hugh Ward and his merry band ot comedians pnesented "The Girl" last night to a large house. Even the most devout follower of Mrs Grundy could not find anything in the comedy to quibble at. Treasurer Low was highly delighted with the financial aspect. He informed me that the takings constituted a record for a show town outside of the four centres Standing room only was the order long before the rise of the curtain, and many were disappointed in not being able to sec this screamer. It would have paid the management to have shown two nights, but time and dates wait for no man. The company received quite an ovation at the close ot the performance. , The next treat in store for playgoers here is the Nellie Stewart Company which has secured dates for October 30 and November 1 Needless to say, the return ot »weec Nell" ie looked forward to, she being a great favourite here, as she is in the whole of Australasia.-Yours faithfully,
