BOWLING.

Sc.cretari«t are requested to forward particulars ai game* p'.ayed and ot forthcoming matches. NOTES BY JACK. It is reported that there is a possibility of the new council declining to approve of the programme of the Dunedin Centre's Christmas Tournament. Mr W. A. Scott, the official tester, left for Christchurch on Tuesday with all his apparatus, with the intention of putting through and stamping as many bowls as are offered . ; or trial. Provided the bowls submitted do not require much alteration to bring them up to the standard, be will be able to put up a good record. From a casual glance at soma, of the greens about Dunedin, the impression was gained that some are more backward tha.n is usually the case at this time of year, and it does not seem likely that a majoritywill be in anything like good order for Labour Day. St. Clair is declared to be so well forward that it is proposed to open on the Ist. The Caledonian lookswell forward, but unless there is a good deal of sunshine in the interval, it will be on tho heavy side on opening day on the Bth prox. The Mornington Green is a perfect picture, and from appearance will be in much better triim than last year, which is saying a good deal. On Kaituna the two rinks under the shade of the bank and tho trees are as usual very backward, but the other six rinks have a fine sward of grass on them, and should play well. If members can restrain their desire to play until the sun gets a chance of bringing on the grass on the two rinks referrod to this charmingly situated plot should be in rare older. The Otago Green promises well, and if the part which last year gave some trouble bv settling down more than was anticipated, has- remained firm and true, the members are likely to have a splendid playimg surface. Balmacewan is something better than fair, but does not look as if it would be in first class order until well on in the season. The old Dunedin Green is a trifle backward in spots, but the grass is showing up well on what were bare patches at the end of last season, and if given the necessary time the green is likely to be again about as good as they make them. The new two-rink green which was top-dressed not so long ago, seems likely to be ready early in the season. If this should prove to be tha case, it will slightly reduce the wear and tear on the other green, which for the past few years has been regularly plaved on during the season from early afternoon .ill lata in the evening. The Roslym Green has not, improved to the extent that was anticipated during the winter. However, a great change may come about when the work is put in it. I hope to bo able to have a look at the other greens durinp the present week. The Phoenix Clurj. Oama.ru. will open both greens on the 12th of October (Labour Day)." In all probability a contingent from Dunedin will spend their holiday in making the journey to and from tho White City. The bowling season in Oamaru is quite six weeks longer than in Dunedin. but despite the fact that play was taking place on the Phoenix Green long after the southern clubs had closed down, the club has always l>een able "to provide a fairlykeen surface on Labour Day. " Skip." in the Southland Times, declares that never has there been so promising a prospect for the game in. Southland. The greens look remarkably well, and should be in excellent playincr order not later than the 19th October. The-good old Southland Green is to I*; got ready for the sth of next month, and, given fine weather, it will be ready right enough. This year it promises to be absolutely at its best. The same writer warns Southland bowler? against anv attempt to utilise the present towards getting the N.Z.B.A. tournament held at Invercargill. True, there will be four greens, but that, will not l>e enough for such a.n imoortant event. Invercargill is not yet, and will not for some time., be able to accommodate the number of players who desire to take part in tho tourney. He would like the centre to disavow any intention of trying to get the tournament held at Invercargill, and then he thinks the usual support for the centre's tournament might be looked for from Dunedin players.
