MOTOR CYCLE CLUB.
HILL-CLIMBING COMPETITION. Th© Otago Motor Cycle Club held a hill-climbing competition on Saturday sfternoon, the course being from the quarry crossing at Mosgiel to the top' of Saddle Hill. There were 38 entrants, of fvhom 27 competed. The men were started lingly, the first man being allowed to finish the course before the second was started. The time-keepers were sationed at the top Of the hill, the departure of a man being ligrialled from the bottom by the dropping of a flag. The afternoon was fine, nrith an almost total absence of wind, and khe road was in excellent order, except for a aoft patch on the outside of the last sorner on the top of the hill. This patch proved something in the nature of a trap to the unwary. First Maddox had a close shave, and then M'Cullough, coming rounj the corner at a high speed, ploughed into it, and had a miraculous escape from a heavy fall. The first man to start, H. Edwards, was sent off prematurely, consequently no time was taken. Two men failed to finish, 11. Morgan breaking the belt of his machine, and J. Gray meeting with a mishap to his engine. "The two fastest times were put up bv G. B. Brown (lmin 45 2-ssec) and W.' Baker (lmin 19 S-ssec). The riders were handicapped iccording to the horse-power of their machines', their position on the list being arrived at. by a formula irr which the horse-power of each man's machine was multiplied by his time, the resu't being divided by the combined weight of rider and machine. The first an c ] second prizewinners, as arrived at bv the formula. were W. Blundell and G.' B. Brown. The following were the officials:—Judge Mr Oakden; starter. Mr M'Shane; keepers—Messrs T. P.
