First Day—Wednesday September 14. The Ashburton County Racing Club commenced its spring meeting to-day, and thorn was a fairly good attendance, but the club missed a lot of betting on the first raoq owing to the late arrival < f the Christchurch special. The chie; inre-rest centred in tlie Cup horses figuring on the card, but their display was not ir-ipr«>ssive. Los Angelos failed badly after going a mile. Tawhaki put wo the best display. Although failing to gain a place, he was travelling at the finish of a fairly fast raoe, and came from last place at the turn. Mart Ist won by staying in the Trial Plate, but did nsthing to enthuse about, and he will have to do better before being considered a Cup horse. Crown Derby ran well for about a mile, when either a fttumble or a bump spoilt his chance. During the day £2610 was registered on the totalisator, or £872 Law than last year, and bookmakers' fees amounted to £204 15s for the day.
