RECORD PRICES FOR PIGS.

"We have all heard about "the goose that lays the golden ozg*," but. judging from the results of the Broom house sale of large ■white pisrs recently, the "goose" is not :n it with the" pig as a gold-prcduoer. Of course the sale was bound to be a good me, fee.' pigs are exceptionally high in price just now. and the Broomhouse stock included many of the cracks and prize-winners of the breed. But it - may be doubted whether even the owner h'mself expected it to La the outstanding success that it was. An average, of £ls 17s 7£d for 6! pigs—many of them vountf "critters"—was certainly a record for Scohlntad, if not for England as -well A top prioo of 62gs for a two-year-old boar, and another price of 40gs for a six-months-old boar, was certainly good business. From a breeder's point of view, 2hovw»ver. the best prices wer-a cot for some

of the litters of young pigs. Thus a litter of seven young pi?s out of t/he Hercules j pow Bicomhouse Eleanor 11, realised £l2O 4s od in all, or an average of £l7 3s 6d. while another litter of youiwj pige out of Broomhouse Thehna realised £lOl 2s 6d, ' or an average of £l2 12s lOd. Anorfcher I latter of very young pigs got by Da-oad-nought II out of Ida XIV, realised £55 13s, : or close on £8 per h£ad. A price of 31gs for a gilt undeT seven months old wae never heard of before in Scotland. Evidently the large white piff is the best kind of "goose to lay the golden eggs" at present. I
