NAVAL DEFENCE
LONDON, September 14.
Sir George Reid and Captain Tickell invited a large party, including the visiting Australian journalists, to inspect the two Australian destroyers at Portsmouth, prior to their They were received by Admiral Sir A. G. CurzonHowe and his. staff. At the luncheon Sir George Reid made a speech on the. Royal Navy, to which the Admiral responded. Captain Grant, of H.M.S. Gibraltar (which escorts the destroyers to Fremantle), was present. September 15.
Sir George Reid recalled Australia's former sense of security as long as Britain's was practically x the only navy in the world, but events had since marched rapidly, and, without questioning other people's sincerely peaceful sentiments, it was impossible to forget that the question of oeace or war was often in the hands of a single man. Britain's only safeguard was to continue to build Dreadnoughts so as to ensure a perfect margin of safety. „
