DEFENCE OF AUSTRLIAA.
MELBOURNE. September 2
In the Senato the Minister of Defence (Senator Pearce) stated that in future no man could he an officer in the Commonwealth army unless he had passed through the ranks. The bill was read a third time.
A deputation representing the Women's Political Crusade asked the Minister of Defence to store foodstuffs in order to avoid starvation in war time.
Mr Pearce replied that as Australia was a food-producing country there was not the same danger as there was in European food-importing countries. As a matter of policy the Federal Government might deem it advisable to take the matter up. He promised to obtain a report from the military authorities. LONDON"," September 4.
The Lords of the Admiralty are placing drafts aboard the Commonwealth destroyers, and will also commission the Yarra and Parramatta as vessels of the Royal Navy for their voyage t« Australia.
