WHEAT AND FLOUR MARKET. Press Association —By Teiegraph—Copyright. LONDON, July 18. The total quantity of wheat ant! flour afloat for the United Kingdom is 2.555,000 quarters, and for the Continent 1.005.000 luarters. The Atlantic shinments were 55,000 quarters, and the Pacific 3000 quarrel-. The total shipments are: —Europe, 385,000 quarters; Argentine, 106,000 quarterc; Russia. 475.050 quarters; India. 112,000 quarters; and Australasia, 4000 quarters. THE MONEY MARKET. Tlie mosr striking feature in hanking returns for the year is the marked increa.se in d-po.-it-s, which amounts, in the total of both classes, to £1,305,433 in the quarter and £2,529.437 in the twelvemonth. At the same time Total of advances is reduced by £57.887 m the quarter and by £1.105,814 in the year. The total improvement in the twelvemonth is therefore £3.636,251. This satisfactory movement i<. of course, the result of the heavy excess iti ihe value, of our exporta for the last twelvemonth over the imports for the same period. The official returns of the Customs Department are not yet available for the June quarter, but the returns to 31st March, together with the interim information in respect of tha exports published by the Department of Commerce, make it abundantly evident that the margin will he in excess of all previous records.

We think it extremely prohable that with such a substantial increase in deposits the banks have felt justified in opening the purse-strings a little more freely in the way of advances, and that but. "for such relaxation the latter would have shown a heavier shrinkage. Be this as it may. the change in the financial position which the returns disclose is very satisfactory, and justifies the anticipation which is pretty geneially entertained that a return to full normal activity .may be looked for in the Dominion in the near future.—Trade Review.
