HOSPITAL AND CHARITABLE AID BOARD.

The monthly meeting of the Hospital and Charitable Aid Board, hold on -V!u,y 25. was attended by Messrs ..!. H. Walker (•chairman), J. 11 »', Hamel, U. E. Keast, D. Larnach, H. M. Ewing, B. S. Myers, W. E. S. Knight, ii. Toinplcton, o. J. Clark, W. T. lalboys, J. Loudon, and W. Wilkinson. Dr Vaiiatine (Inspector-general of Hospitals) and Dr Finch (Canterbury District Health Officer) were also in attendance. The Chairman formally welcomed Mr Keast to the beard's tabic as the newlyappointed representative of Ciutha. he said he 'was sure that Mr Keast would prove an acquisition : ho had been a. member of the old board, and they knew what his services were worth. Mr Clark wrote resigning his position as a member of the Works Committee. He ■pointed out that Mr Keast was now a member of the board, and he thought Mr Keast much better qualified, by reason of his former experience, than he (Mr Clarkj to fill a position on the Works Committee. —The letter in the meantime was received. Correspondence. Tho Town Cleric, on behalf of the Works Committee, asked permission to erect a convenience on the Hospital grounds.—Mr Loudon moved that tho application be declined. Tho old Hospital Trustees and Dr Valintine were both opposed to any convenience being placed on the Hospital ground, where Dr Valintine said that thcro was no room for any more buildings. —Mr Ewing seconded the motion.—Mr Clark moved as an amendment that the matter be held over until members had an opportunity of inspecting the site.—Mr Larnach said that there were too many buildings on the ground already. Let the City Council purchase a piece of ground somewhere else.—The amendment was carried. The Town Clerk applied for a contribution towards the cost of improving the road leading to tho Fever Hospital at Logan's Point.—Referred to the Finance Committee. PALMERSTON SANATORIUM. In reference to the erection of the Sanatorium for Consumptives at Palmerston, the Works Committee reported having acted as follows : Requested the architects to report on—(a) The proposal to erect a cottage near the stable for a married couple, and drainage therefrom; (b) proposal for a site for a doctor's residence end drainage therefrom. Applied to the Dunedin City Council for the services of Mr D. Tannock for the purpose of reporting on the laying out and planting of the grounds. Requested Mr F. R. Shepherd to report on the proposal to instal electric light at the Sanatorium, and submit his views regarding the use of a small Pelton wheel or engine to generate the electrical energy. Applied to the Dunedin Fire Board for the services of Captain Mitchell in re the placing of firo plugs on the water supply. Instructed the solicitors (Messrs Holmes, Gilkison, and White) to prepare an agreement with the Palmerston Borough Council for the supply of water in terms of the arrangements made with that council. The report was adopted. FINANCE COMMITTEE. The Finance Committee recommended that tenders bo invited for all supplies to the Otago Benevolent Instituton. It was reported that application had been mode to tho Dunedin City Corporation that the water supply to the Fever Hospital be charged at a special rate —namely, Is per lOOOgal; and that the pay-sheets and accounts had been passed for payment, amounting to:—Dunedin Hospital, £502 4s 6d; Benevolent Institution, £392 7s Id; general account, £1166 15s sd.—The report was adopted. HOSPITAL COMMITTEE. The Hospital Committee reported that Mr Wilkinson (chairman of the Works Committee) had been authorised to confer with the architects as to the complaints of the honorary surgeons and resident medical officer re sterilised water, ventilation, and gas heater in the operating theatre, and also in regard to steam pressure in the sterilising room, with a view to improving same. Tho application of the Medical Students' Debating Club for the use of the lecture room on Friday evenings, fortnightly, bad been granted. Letters of thanks had been sent the following for their donations to the Dunedin Hospital: —James Douglas, J. and A. Callander (box of honey), A. J. Buckland (magazines). The arrangements made in terms of resolutions of 29th November, 1909, that three physicians and three surgeons appointed for the treatment of in-patients shall alternatively take charge for four months of one surgical and one medical ward, including the Children's Ward, would be adhered to for a year. Nurse Thompson's application for i.urses from private nurses of institutions to attend lectures at the Dunedin Hospital has been granted, subject to the pleasure of the committee, and provided lecturers offer no objection. The report was adopted. BENEVOLENT COMMITTEE. The Benevolent Committee reported that tin following admissions to the Benevolent Institution bad been made: —On 9th inst., two males from the Hospital; on 16th. three cases, and on 23rd, three men from the Hospital. The following deaths were reported : —One woman, aged 32 years, and two men, aged 74 and 77 respectively. The proposal to distemper the wards of the institution and two skylights in the verandah of the wards had been referred to the Works Committee. The house in Cargill street, reported to be vacant, has bad one of the rooms papered and blind rolleis fixed, and had been occupied since the 9th inst. —The report was adopted. reports of matrons. The Matron of the Fever Hospital reported" that two patients had been admitted during the month, and fo'ur discharged. Six were at present in the hospital, all making satisfactory progress. The Matron of the Maternity Hospital reported that 12 confinements bad taken place during the month, and 13 persons had been discharged. Eleven persons had been admitted and 13 babies bom. The Matron of the Kaitangata Hospital reported that four oases of diphtheria had been admitted during the month..
