GRAN'S GIFT.

A wreath for Gran Of full-blown mountain flowers, Gifting as it might be Of sunny hours To shaded valley, Verdure overrun, By that first friend Of gardeners—the Sun. Her life, the vale, Gran's little bit of earth Was blossom-mantled, Tended to with mirth; Till never weed Ot sere leaf could b* seen; Life was her garden— She the garden-queen. No traveller passed Her cottage, but was blessed With cheerful greeting. Blossom of the breast! No sad one entered. Gran could not console, Full well with kindness, Blossom of the soul. Folk learned, though prest The while with heavy care, Passing her cot, to- look , For sunshine there; In time, the vale, Though shadow overrun, Grew blossom-mantled 1 , Gran's kind heart, the sun. Then, soft as daisies do On mountain steep When tired day is done, Gran went to sleep, With grace of dreams That follow sleepers who Have done the Master's will, As daisies do. Gladd'ning their mounds! Gran's garden was her In it no flower of love Or kindness died; These we retain, Bequeathing this of ours From her own plot, A gift of sun-blown flowers. —John MacLenttan.
