WELLINGTON!, M«y 26. Gradually we are slipping back into the ordinary daily routine so sadly interrupted by the death of our King. Mr K. C. Waterfield, private secretary to his Excellency the Governor, and Mrs Waterfield left for England by the Shaw, Savill boat Rangatira last Thursday. The opera, season has been a very gireau success. " Madam Butterfly " drew crowded! houses, '<nd everyone was delighted, whether they saw the mrch-starred Bel Sorel or cur Aii'str.alia.l soprano, Amy Castles. The flocking was splendid. Ir. the first act Chocho San appeared in a delicious gown of rose satin entirely veiled in gold tissue and a kimona of cloth of gold. Later this was cl.fii'ged for the richest of ivory patina with wisteria, in natural colour shaded to faintest mauve at the hips trailing in a border from knees to hem. In the next act a lovely gown was worn, giving place later to the pink again. In all acts the hair was quaintly dressed with crimson beiriss or flowers. Many visitors are in town for the opera season. Amongst them are:—Mr and Mora R. Barton, Mrs Bidwell, Mr and Mrs F. Cooper (Daunevirke), and Miss H'awkin (Wsnganui). Miss Nora Long's friends are very delighted to hear of her great success. To bet chosen as primi dorna. for the Lyons opera season is joy for any young singer. Many of lis remember the delicate, dreadfully rervous little girl with pale face, slight figure, and straight hair, but with a sweet, liquid voicH'. Even when singing to her school chums her. voice shook, and at times quite failed her with nervcrssress, but at all times it was marvellously sweet and true and flexible as a bird's. She had a- sa<jl girlhood. May her future be all brightnea's". Herr Lemmer and Mrs Lemmer have come from Nelson for the opera season. Mrs Hope Lewis and her daughter, Mrs

Guy Williams, are staying at the Grand Hotel.

Dr and Mrs Garnet Harty have returned from Pieton. Dr and Mrs Shand, who have been in Blenheim, have also returned. Captain Blunt, of H.M.S. Pioneer, gave a great deal of pleasure to many of his small friends last Thursday, inviting them aoross to tea and entertaining them right loyally with mttrry game and delicious tea.

AUCKLAND, May 25.

A most delightful time was spent last "Wednesday afternoon in the Choral Hall, when the members of the .Liedertafel, the Orchestral Society, and the Choral Society were entertained by invitation by Mr Henry Brett to a musical recital, which had for its object the introducing of the wonderful E'llwcod children and Miss Winnie Nixon. During the interval tea. was served in the anteroom, and, as the afternoon was cold and damp, it was greatly appreciated. Mrs Brett was wearing a. grey coat and skirt, and black toque with white aigrette. In all, there must have been some 400 guests present. Tha Ellwocd children are certainly born geniuses, and their concerts in the Choral Hall are being greatly .appreciated by the musical -section of the public. Mrs Couper and her son, Mr T. The opening ceremony was performed by the Mayor of Auckland (Mr L. J. Bagnall), after which mixed foursomes were , started, tho winners being Miss Ethria Pierce and Mr Douglas Hay. Tea was served in the clubhouse, and was presided over by lady members of the club.

It would seem as though in a very few years all the pioneers of the Dominion will have crossed over the " Great Divide." This week I have to record'the passing away of Mrs du Moulin (widow of the late Mr J. P. du Moulin) at her residence in Symonds street, at the advanced age of 84 years. Mrs d'u Moulin was the mother of Colonel Louis du Moulin, of the Royal Sussex Regiment, who was shot at Abraham's Kraal jxvst at the close of the lute Boer War. I might, here say that Colonel du Moulin enjoyed the distinction of being the first New Zealander born who had risen frorii a subaltern to the command of a British regiment. His wife and only son and daughter have been living in England for some years past.
