CROMWELL VOLUNTEER SOCIAL.
The above very successful reunion was held in the Athenreum Hall on Wednesday May 25. The early part of the evening was devoted to games, song-5, and music. Mrs Morris san". " Tell me my heart," Cantain Jolly ' "TT.-s old brigade," Miss White " Cherry Rip-e," and Mr John Tizard " Sleep 'neath the dark blue waves!" These ever popular vocalists were in splendid voice, and were loudly applauded. At 9.30 p.m. Captain Jolly presented the many beautiful and valuable trophies to the successful members of the corps in the shooting competitions. The successful competitors were —Captain Jolly (two trophies). Corporal Betts (two), Privates Lawson. BLaekie, Wrighteon. Renshaw, and M'Leay. Sergea-nt Thomas Leech. Private Thomas. Sergeant Wrightson, Sergeant Varcoe (2-), and Lieutenant; Cahill. An innovation in the shape of ladies* trophies was inaugurated this year, and these will be competed for annually. The ladies nominate themselves, and are balloted for as recipients of the trophies won by th successful marksman. On this occasion the successful ladies were Misses Emma Varcoe, Marthi Mitchell, and Mrs William Toms, who were loudly applauded when the trophies were handed to theja. Captain Jolly addressed the assemblage in a stirring patriotic speech. He also thanked the ladies who had always assisted them so loyally, arid he thanked them on behalf of the corps for the refreshments that would be handed round. After these were dispensed with, the hall was cleared for dancing; and as the floor was in splendid order, 50 couples thoroughly enjoyed themselves till 2 a.m. to the excellent music provided by Mr Frederick Partridge.
