PUBLICATIONS RECEIVED

" Health and Beauty for Women and Girls," by Helena Gent, with a series of simple lessons, is the latest publication to hand from Health and Strength (Ltd.), London. This handbook should prove of the greatest use to young people who give a thought to the care of their health and the development of their bodies. The exercises recommended and illustrated aie of -the simplest, and no aparatus of any kind is required. All that is required is to devote a few minutes daily to the exercises in the home. The authoress devotes a chapter to the health of women generally, and then proceeds to answer in the negative the question, "Is woman physically weak?" After a chapter each to the woman womanly and the woman who is always attractive, attention is paid to the ailments peculiar to women, and how housework can be made a means of gaining health. A few lines are devoted to dress; the value of deep breathing emphasised, and the benefits to be derived from massage described. A chapter is devoted to diet, and then follow ten exercises for general development. The little handbook should command a ready sale.

The Pall Mall Magazine for May opens with a well-illustrated article on the AngloJapanese Exhibition at present delighting London The portion selected for description illustrates the wonderful skill of Japanese gardeners in producing bizarre effects with flower®. Mr George W. Smalley continues his valuable AngloAmerican memories. Mr Smalley has been on intimate terms with all the prominent people on both sides of the Atlantic, and his recollections are full of sidelights on important events. The number i6-particu-larly rich in stories, there being no fewer than 20 of them, and they are of a quality such as might be expected in a magazine which has rapidly attained front rank. The illustrations, too, are of a- high grade of merit.
