ADMISSION OF ASIATICS.

CHINESE EURASIANS. WELLINGTON, May 25. A young man who arrived by the Moeraki, from Sydney, en route lor Tahiti, was detained by the Customs officer while inquiries were made as to whether he should be allowed to land. He was born in Adelaide. His mother was an English woman and his father a half-caste Chinese. After a brief talk with the young man the Collector of Customs immediately gave him permission to land. The Collector explained that the Customs officers boarding vessels would report to collectors on ail persons of suspected Asiatic origin before such were allowed to land at any ivew Zealand port. The Solicitor-general had given an opinion that Chinese Eurasians could land in New Zealand subject to the Collector of Customs satisfying himself that they were half-caste, and not wholly Chinese, to whom the usual Chinese legislation would still apply.

A memorial is to be erected over the grave in the Pahiatua cemetery of Mr Michael Quirke, who was shot in Palmerston North during the hunt for Pawelka. A large sum of money has already been subscribed for the purchase of a stone, including a number of donations from Masterton, where the decased was popularly knowtt.
