EMPIRE DAY.
CELEBRATIONS IN THE COLONIES CEREMONY IN CANADA. OTTAWA, May 23. General French reviewed 3200 uniformed Cadets and several thousand girl pupils at Toronto. The girls decorated the monuments around Parliament Buildings, and the general was emphatic in his praises of the display, which he said he would like everybody -in the Motherland to have seen. SYDNEY, May 24. Empire Day was celebrated in the schools in the usual way, and quietly in the city. Twenty thousand.- peoplfe gathered in front of the Post Office and sang "Rule Britannia" and the "National Anthem," concluding with cheers for King George. LONDON, May 23. The Earl of Meath tentatively suggests June 23, the anniversary of Queen Victoria's coronation, as suitable for the adjourned Empire demonstrations. The London County Council has cancelled the half-holiday, and the head teachers' addresses during the school halfhour on the duties of citizenship. LONDON, May 24. Many British schools sang Kipling's " Recessional " and read his new . poem " The Dead King." Sandgate and Epping Schools exchanged flags with their Australian namesakes. There were celebrations on a large scale at Fanning Island, Seychelles, Antigua, and Trinidad. May 25. Empire Day was celebrated quietly, addresses in the schools being the leadingfeature. Lord Roberts and many others watched the Imperial Cadets, who were competitors at the Stock Exchange Rifle Club's ranges at Aldgate. A holiday was observed throughout Canada. A monument to the South African war heroes was unveiled at Toronto and a monument to Queen Victoria at Gibraltar.
