WEST COAST NOTES.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) GREYMOUTH, April 28. Owing to the policy of the contractors in connection with the Otira tunnel in giving preference to married men, the attendance at the Otira School has increased. There are now over 70 pupils on the roll, and in consequence the school has become so crowded that it was fou»d necessary to add a second room. The WesOind Education BoaTd has received notic* that a recent application to the Education Department for the necessary grant has achieved its purpose, and imme* diate steps will be taken to call for tenders for the work. It is stated that the case which was to have begin brought against several wellknown pi&ple in Westland by the Commissioaer of Taxes in reference to some Wellington property, has been settled, the parti' ■• agreeing tu pay the amounts in- ' olvecL
