It is stated that a quarter of a million of money is coming from Australia shortly for the development of gold mining in the Hokitika district. Soundings have 'been taken by the secretary of the dutha River Board and Captain Butler this week with a view to finding a suitable site for the board's proposed steamer repairing slip at North Balolutha, below the traffic bridge, where it is thought there is a sufficiency of water. _ It is considered it would be highly inconvenient to have the slip in the tidal waters near Port Molrneux, as lately proposed.
